Job summary

Are you an ODP (operating department practitioner) graduating in 2024 and seeking a supportive environment to start your career?

As a newly qualified ODP you will be fully supported to become part of our professional community. Support will include your line manager, the practice education team as well as our wellbeing team. As a newly registered ODP, our 12-month Preceptorship Programme will support your transition from a student to a confident and professional registered theatre practitioner

Main duties of the job

You will responsible for providing skilled clinical and technical assistance as a member of the operating theatre. Provide high quality care to patients undergoing treatment within the Peri-Operative Environment.

Act as professional role model/team leader setting standards of practice promoting clinical effectiveness and opportunities for teaching others as part of a 24hour service.

Adult theatres based in the Bristol Royal Infirmary (Hey Groves Theatres & Queens Theatres Day Unit) specialising in range of procedures, including ENT and complex Maxillo Facial Surgery, Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery, Upper & Lower GI, Orthopaedic (including trauma and limb reconstruction)

Adult theatre based in St Michaels Hospital focusing on Obstetrics, ENT, Upper , Oral Surgery and Gynaecology along with a weekly maxillofacial service for adult patients with learning disabilities.

Bristol Eye Hospital : specialist ophthalmic theatres at one of the countrys leading specialist hospitals with an international reputation for the treatment of diseases of the eye. Caring for all ages of patients

Bristol Dental Hospital : a regional specialist unit providing specialist oral and dental surgery for all age groups

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

RN (NMC registered) / or NVQ 3 Operating Department Practice pre 2004 or Diploma in Higher Education Operating Department Practice post 2004 Current NMC registration / or current Health Professions Council registration for ODPs

Desirable

Work towards relevant university accredited post basic study programmes Eg: A&E course, ITU course, Care of the Elderly, PICU, Renal, Oncology, etc

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

Broad knowledge and experience of clinical nursing practice within a hospital environment Interest in the clinical area Experience of teaching

Desirable

Experience of taking charge

Skills and Abilities

Essential

Demonstrate competence in clinical skills relevant to the clinical area Good interpersonal and communication skills, able to communicate effectively with patients, carers and MDT.
