An opportunity has arisen for an experienced senior nurse to join the Cardiothoracic Surgical department, as the job share Senior Matron. The department has 58 beds, including 4 high dependency beds and a private ward, which cares for elective adult thoracic and cardiac surgical patients.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a Senior Matron with evidence of team leadership in senior nursing roles, and excellent communication skills. The role will involve providing expert clinical leadership, effective team management and staff development for 3 surgical wards, in addition to clinical leadership for surgical specialist teams including DOSA. You will act as a professional role model to your team in delivering the highest standards in patient care. The candidate must have substantial experience in cardiothoracic nursing in a leadership role, including critical care, and have proven evidence of self-development and innovation.

Role Overview

The post holder will be a professional role model and leader, for the nursing staff within the surgical wards, Surgical Discharge team, Wound care team, Practice Education team, DOSA/FFS, ANP practitioners, and temporary staffing office. A close, effective and efficient liaison will be promoted between these teams ensuring that the diverse needs of patients and staff are met by delivery of a co-ordinated and efficient service.  The post holder will act as a resource for the multi-professional team, ensuring that the needs and views of the patient and their families contribute to the development of the service. To be responsible for the continuing professional development and overall performance of all nursing staff and other support staff employed within these teams ( ward clerks, health care assistants, administrators).  To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specified within the Harefield Heart and Lung directorate. To provide a clear focus for clinical leadership, providing a highly visible and authoritative presence and be responsible for ensuring the delivery of the highest standard of care, working with stakeholders to develop a nursing vision for the future To work with the Nurse Recruitment Lead to ensure that recruitment and retention of staff within the departments is optimised. To play a major role in the continuous development of the Trust as a senior member of the Surgical teams and directorate nursing management team. To ensure that Infection Prevention and Control is an integral part of service delivery in Surgical care and all infection control policies are being adhered to. To participate in the Senior Nurse on call rota for the hospital, pro rota.

Essential criteria

MSc or MSc (working towards/commenced) Post Graduate qualifications Recognised teaching/mentorship certification Leadership / management qualification, or equivalent experience

Advanced Life Support

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria

•Post registration experience in a senior nursing post including shift leading and performance management responsibility •Evidence of advanced clinical skills in cardiothoracic nursing •Experience in initiating change and management of change •Experience managing a budget

Skills and Knowledge

•Proven evidence of leadership in multi-professional teams •Demonstrate commitment through involvement in Trust wide initiatives/committees •Able to demonstrate a working knowledge in standard setting and quality management •Evidence of applying current research to practice
