Job summary

The Department provides an extensive Orthopaedic and Trauma service for the reception, assessment, examination and treatment of people with abnormalities of the muscular skeletal system or who have sustained a recent injury. Elective services are provided at Queen Elizabeth Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup as well as at the Princess Royal University Hospital. There are Fracture Clinics every weekday and there is a daily Trauma list.

The Department offers good training for junior medical staff in Orthopaedic Surgery with a broad range of treatment and the management of Trauma and Elective patients. There is a link with the King's College UMDS, which provides four Specialty Trainee Registrars.

Main duties of the job

THE ORTHOPAEDIC DEPARTMENT

The Orthopaedic department has one trauma ward at the Queen Elizabeth site and most elective work is undertaken at the Queen Mary's (Sidcup) site. Orthopaedic clinics and fracture clinics are currently held on Queen Elizabeth site Monday to Friday.

Job responsibilities

TRAUMA AND ORTHOPAEDIC DIRECTORATE

THE ORTHOPAEDIC DEPARTMENT

The Orthopaedic department has one trauma ward at the Queen Elizabeth site and most elective work is undertaken at the Queen Marys (Sidcup) site. Orthopaedic clinics and fracture clinics are currently held on Queen Elizabeth site Monday to Friday.

The department organises Trauma on CEPOD principles with most trauma performed on a daily dedicated trauma lists under Consultant supervision. There are daily fracture clinics and typically each consultant team has 2 days trauma responsibilities. Day one will be the on- call with a fracture clinic and ward round for admitted trauma patients. Day two is allocated in theatres for trauma surgery. The Consultants team have daily operating lists and elective outpatients clinics.

One session each week is devoted to departmental meetings, audit, case presentation, journal club, projects review and SE Thames Orthopaedic Training Circuit.

The department has a close working relationship with the Orthogeriatric team and they provide 24 hour care to all trauma patients over 65 years.
