Job summary

An exciting, part-time opportunity, has arisen to join our highly proactive & supportive team of over 30 paediatric SLTs, here at Mid-Yorkshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (MYTHT).

This permanent job role is with our clinical team working within Special Schools across the Wakefield District Local Authority, for 3 days a week.

We offer regular supervision, clinical & team meetings, as well as safeguarding supervision and CPD.

A fully-funded post-graduate training opportunity in dysphagia is also provided, subject to remaining with the MYTHT for 2 years post training.

Main duties of the job

You will carry a caseload of children with complex communication needs that may also have AAC &/or dysphagia needs.

You will support training of education staff.

You will participate in regular supervision and team meetings.

You will have regular CPD opportunities plus a yearly appraisal to explore your career & team development.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To undertake holistic/specific assessments in order to determine a childs Speech, language and communication needs then plan, implement and evaluate care and determine goals and outcomes for children with complex communication difficulties (including AAC & children with social communication difficulties) for children in special school. Being line managed by the B7 Special School clinical lead, attending bi-monthly supervision.

To carry a dysphagia caseload within special school offering assessment & advice to parents/carers accordingly; attending bi-monthly supervision.

To work clinically with clients presenting with a wide range of communication difficulties, initiating and promoting excellence in clinical practice acting as a role model to junior staff.

To support the assessment and implementation of AAC (both high & low tech) working with external Agencies where required (Barnsley Assistive Technology).

To be awareof & contribute to Risk Management.

Tocontribute to Clinical Governance initiatives.

To maintain a culture which recognises and works in partnership with clients and carers, involving them in all decisions relating to care delivery.

To work with the Local Authority, private & third sector providers, ensuring effective timely communication between all agencies & to ensure all interventions and goal plans are complied with.

To liaiseeffectively with colleagues, other agencies, clients and their carers to ensurean efficient system of communication. Be able to vary how information iscommunicated dependent on the recipients, this may include difficult orsensitive information. To attend, & participate in, regular team meetings.

To demonstrateand maintain own knowledge and awareness of recognising and respondingappropriately to safeguarding the needs of vulnerable children. Participationin regular safeguarding supervision at least once every 12 weeks, in line withtrust policy. To attend multi-agency safeguarding meetings as required.

To attend designated meetings and ensure accurate feedback of any changes to clients communication and/or feeding difficulties.

To participate in clinical supervision ensuringthat practice is maintained at high levels and is evaluated utilisingappropriate mechanisms.

To provide regular clinical supervision formembers of the team.

To encourage contributions and suggestions from staff to improve the delivery of high-quality service within the department.

To be pro-active in self-development byparticipating in learning opportunities provided through staff training andsupervision.

Maintain and update skills and knowledge throughlife-long learning, especially within the sphere of childrens services.

To provide opportunities for student training asrequired & liaise with HEIs as appropriate.

Toundertake all mandatory/essential training as required by MYHT.

To take the lead in team developments as designated by the line manager.

To maintain standards in ongoing health information, both electronic and paper-based, ensuring safe keeping and confidentiality, accurate record keeping of relevant data and profiling. To input clinical information onto SystmOne as per MYHT policy.

To maintain confidentiality, privacy and dignity in relation to the clients and their treatments at all times in line with trust policy.

Maintain a tidy, clear working environment,being aware of potential health and safety hazards to self, other members ofstaff, clients and visitors. Report any faults / breakages as they occur to theappropriate department.
