Job summary

This is an exciting one year post aimed at existing Haematology trainees to provide additional training in Haemostasis.

The post holder will be required to work alongside the existing Haemostasis SpR who rotates on a 4 monthly basis.

Bristol is a Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre, an ITP treatment centre and a Regional TTP service. The Benign Haematology Service is situated within the Bristol Haematology Unit which comprises a 25 bedded in-patient unit, Benign Haematology Day Unit, and Apheresis unit. There are close links with the specialist coagulation laboratory which is based in the main building of the BRI. This is a modern and well-equipped Laboratory providing a wide range of services for the diagnosis of coagulation disorders for the local population and regionally.

This post does not involve cover for the Haemoglobinopathy service.

The job is based in the Haematology Unit within BHOC which comprises a 25 bedded in-patient unit and day unit areas. There is additionally a large out-patient department within the Bristol Cancer Institute and a Teenage and Young Adult Unit within the same building.

The postholder is not expected to participate in out-of-hours cover, but there may be an opportunity to be part of the second on rota covering weekends.

The post is well suited to trainees at the end of their training either post Part 2 FRCPath and still in training or as a post CCT clinical fellowship.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work within the adult Haemostasis/Liaison Team. Additionally the post holder will attend benign Haematology clinics including general and subspecialty clinics (Haemophilia, Haemostasis and Thrombosis and Benign Haematology). They will also be involved in responding to GP queries through the electronic advice and guidance system. They will provide mentorship for the Haemostasis SpR who rotates on a four monthly basis. They will work closely with our Benign Haematology nursing and administration team to facilitate high quality care for our patients. There is also an opportunity to gain further training in Paediatric Haemostasis. Within the Bristol Haematology Unit there are a total of 6 SpRs covering ward, day unit laboratory, Haemostasis and BMT slots in three month blocks, in addition there are 2 BMT clinical fellows, a Lymphoma Fellow, a Leukaemia Fellow, a Myeloma Fellow plus two Haematology staff grades with responsibility for day unit activities. The out of hours on call is also covered by a Transfusion registrar who works split site between NHSBT and UHBristol and a Paediatric Haematology registrar. The post-holder will not be contracted to contribute to the Haematology Registrar on call rota, but there may be an opportunity to be part of the second on rota covering weekends. The successful candidate will be required to collaborate with colleagues within Haematology and other specialities.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

4 years or more full time post graduate experience (or its equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis) at least 2 years of which has been in an adult general medicine specialty which can be relevant to Haematology Experience working in Haematology Good working relationships with colleagues Good relationships and communication with patients Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice including Good clinical care/ Maintaining good medical practice/ Good relationships and communication with patients/ Good working relationships with colleagues/ Good teaching and training/ Professional behaviour and probity/ Delivery of good acute clinical care/ Evidence of experience and enthusiasm for teaching
