An exciting Design Engineer opportunity has arisen in our Submarines Services business for an Mechanical Design Engineer with experience designing lifting and handling equipment and/or experience of component design within the UK nuclear industry.

Our defence business is a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority, managing all aspects of plant design, safety, manufacture, performance, and through-life support. The Services delivery business unit is responsible for providing through-life support services and solutions to the naval Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP) powering the UK's nuclear flotilla.

As part of Services, the Engineering Team are responsible for providing expertise and equipment to support the submarines enterprise. This includes the design and substantiation of lifting equipment as well as the design and substantiation of assembly and test tooling.

We are looking for a Design Engineer who will work with the engineers in the team, and closely with our procurement colleagues, to assist us in designing and delivering our products and services against challenging time, cost, and quality constraints.

The Services engineering team is a growing area of the business supporting many different projects around the UK. Working with us allows you to develop your people skills as well as getting involved with many different areas of the submarines business. It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What you will be doing:

You will collaborate with the wider enterprise to design mechanical products.

Accountable for design programmes taking items from concept through to manufacture and validation. Working with the project management team to ensure that schedules, risks, costs, and resource requirements are understood and maintained. Stakeholder management. Assisting procurement in the manufacture of products by the external supply chain, this may require travel to manufacturer’s facilities. Articulating design intent through 3D modelling and 2D drawing using Siemens NX. Substantiation of design through hand calculations and/or with the use of analysis software e.g., knowledge of BS2573, BS EN 13001, ANSYS. Supporting the programme to control the delivery of the work packages to meet the programme time, cost, and quality requirements.

Mechanical design experience ideally including lifting and handling equipment and/or experience of the UK nuclear industry. Good knowledge of Standard IT packages: Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Previous knowledge of Teamcenter, SAP and Coupa would be advantageous. Proven organisational skills for self and others and good attention to detail. Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the business. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines you need to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you don’t currently already have this in place.
