Job overview

Ward D3 is a 19 bedded acute medical unit with particular interest in Diabetes and Endocrinology conditions. You will work closely with the diabetic and hematology teams along with the Matron to provide the highest standards of safe, personal and effective care. A flexible approach and the ability to respond to the demands of a rapidly changing acute clinical environment are essential. The team is committed to delivering a high standard of nursing care within a calm and compassionate environment.
You will demonstrate strong leadership qualities and have a passion for improving the patient and relative experience. A sound knowledge base is essential along with well developed communication skills .Good time management skills are essential, as is the ability to prioritise your workload.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for maintaining high standards of care in the ward environment.Facilitate the management of the ward in terms of staff recruitment, staffing rosters and day to day running of the ward. You will work closely with the ward medical teams to ensure that care for the patient is safe, personal and effective. You will communicate with all wards and departments along with the wider MDT to facilitate admissions and safe discharges.You will also support the matron on call as part of the out of hours shift system to provide adequate nurse management cover on the hospital site.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide nurse leadership, continuous improvement and delivery of care within the ward environment

Ensure that care is delivered in a safe, personal and effective way.

To be a confident, inspirational role model for the junior nursing team

Demonstrate care and compassion and enable an inclusive environment that ensures that patients are treated with dignity and respect.

Ensuring best practice in infection control.

Regularly review standards on the ward with the Directorate Matron to ensure they are maintained within the framework of the trust internal inspections.

Ensure safe and effective discharge planning that puts the patient at the heart of all decision making

Person specification Registered Nurse Essential criteria
  • Previous experience working within secondary care
  • Has a qualification that enables them to mentor students
  • Able to produce reports to a high standard
  • Able to prioritise workload
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within acute medicine particularly within diabetes
  • Experience of budget management
  • Quality improvement experience
