Mitcham, United Kingdom South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust Full time

Job summary

The Merton / Sutton CAMHS Mental Health Support Team (MHST) covers a cluster of mainstream and specialist SEND schools across both boroughs. The team works with mainstream pupils and has a specialist remit to work with children and young people on the Autistic Spectrum or who have special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

The team comprises of a Clinical Psychologist, 4 Education Wellbeing Practitioners (EWPs) and three other clinical posts. The Psychologist leads and supervises the team, coordinates the service offer across the school cluster as well as leading on the whole school approach (WSA) offer. The other clinicians in the team offer direct clinical interventions (including groups) within the schools and take on elements of the WSA offer depending on areas of interest and core skill sets for their profession.

This is an exciting and varied role with good scope for innovative working within a new national initiative to increase mental health input directly into schools. There is a strong peer support network across the Education Wellbeing Service (comprising all the MHSTs and Children's Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP) teams). There is opportunity for developing skills around the WSA work, working with lower risk cases and being at the forefront of an innovative service. We are looking for an enthusiastic, proactive and creative occupational therapist who is able to work cohesively within a team and also independently as required.

Main duties of the job

The post provides clinical input for moderate mental health presentations, consultation to school staff and a coordinated team WSA. This may include running parent workshops, staff training sessions or home visits on occasion.

The postholder will offer direct clinical interventions, both individual and group, as appropriate. The WSA work involves working collaboratively with schools at a preventative level and meeting need as it arises within the wider school setting. There are plenty of opportunities for running school staff training sessions, parent workshops and working jointly with the other MHSTs.

This post requires:

Qualification as a registered Occupational Therapist Strong experience of working therapeutically with children, young people & parents An interest and experience of working with special educational needs and disabilities Experience of working with self-harm and / or challenging behaviour Strong communication and organisation skills The ability to work cohesively and collaboratively both within a small team and within the wider school cluster The ability to use feedback, reflect and adapt accordingly
