Flamingo 12-month Secondment Opportunities
Ever wondered if ICU is a place where you would like to work but never had the opportunity?
We are offering several places on our unique 12-month secondment. This is open to all Band 5 nurses who have worked at GOSH.
This secondment will include the following:
- 2 to 3 months supernumerary time (depending on experience)
- A dedicated mentor to help guide you on CICU
- Full support from the Management and Education Band 7 team
- A place on the ICU Foundation Programme
- A chance to become ventilator competent
- Learn or enhance unique skills such as management of chest drains, pacing wires, non-invasive ventilation management and invasive ventilation theory and practical skills.
The ICU Foundation Programme comprises of 9 study days:
- Respiratory
- Cardiology
- Drugs
- Neonatology
- Nephrology
- Ventilator Presentation Day & tracheostomy training
- Neurology
- Immunology, ethics & End of life care
- Cardiac Clinical Emergencies
And there are several workbooks to be completed prior to becoming an ICU proficient practitioner and ventilator competent. These are:
- CICU Skills Framework – a competency sign-off book. To be completed across 9 months.
- CICU Drug book – A mixture of theory questions and practical vasoactive drug sign-off. To be completed in 4 months.
- Ventilation logbook – 4 clinical case log books to be completed. One of these to convert into a presentation to deliver on Study Day number 6.
- Anatomy and physiology workbook – A question and answer book to complete across the 12 months.

- NMC Registered Nurse (appropriate to clinical speciality)
- Relevant nursing qualification
- Evidence of ongoing professional development linked to demonstrable competencies
- Assessor or practice supervisor qualification/experience
- Experience of having worked with acute/chronically sick children or specialised transferable skills
- Understanding of professional and current issues in children’s nursing
- Understanding of the importance of research and evidence-based practice
- Basic knowledge of computer skills
- Understanding of safeguarding issues according to Trust policies and procedures
