Job summary

The Sleep Disorders Centre is seeking a part-time (6 PA) Consultant Neurologist to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward thinking team. This is a post arising from the developing need for clinical support for complex neurological and psychiatric patients with sleep disorders, for the promotion of a research programme in non-respiratory sleep, and the expansion of non-commercial and commercial trials.

This part time post requires knowledge and expertise in the management of complex sleep disorders, especially the interface between neurological disorders and sleep. The ideal candidate would have a strong clinical background in sleep medicine and general neurology, previous experience of clinical trials, and would be willing to develop additional sleep services.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a first class team in an active and progressive central London teaching hospital environment.

About us

The PACCS directorate includes Critical Care, the Lane Fox Weaning and Ventilation Unit, Respiratory Medicine, and the Sleep Disorders Centre, and is committed to delivering excellent patient care whilst meeting the Government targets for A&E waiting times, cancer and 18 weeks.

The PACCS Directorate team consists of Prof Nicholas Hart, Clinical Director, Stuart Bell, General Manager, and Heather Winteridge, Head of Nursing. They are supported by a team of Matrons and Service Managers who lead on the day to day delivery of the various services.

The Sleep Disorder Centre sits within the PACCS Directorate. The Sleep Disorders Centre is the largest comprehensive sleep service in the UK, consultants contributing respiratory and neurological expertise. There are strong links with the Lane Fox Unit, respiratory, neurological, psychiatric and paediatric sleep services.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The appointee would be expected to undertake two general/neurological sleep clinics weekly, and one general neurology clinic within the Department of Neurology.

In addition, there may be additional requirements to contribute to patient vetting and report sleep studies.

The appointee would be expected to attend multidisciplinary discussion of complex patients passing through the service

Person Specification

Professional Qualifications

Essential

Eligible for full UK GMC/GDC registration and a Licence to Practise. On GMC Specialist Register for Neurology or within six months of attaining CCT.

Clinical Experience

Essential

Extensive experience of management of neurological patients with sleep disorders, and of general neurology patients. Expertise in pharmacological management of neurological and sleep conditions

Desirable

Involvement in clinical trials

Clinical Skills

Essential

Ability to interpret PSG and other sleep-related investigations

Audit Management & IT

Essential

An understanding of the appropriate use of databases for clinical audit and governance purposes. Understanding of principles of audit.

Previous experience in research. Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff.
