Research Fellow in Decolonising Zoo Interpretation

The School of Biological and Environmental Sciences now seeks to appoint a Research Fellow in Decolonising Zoo Interpretation on a part-time (0.2fte) basis, for a fixed term of 6 months. Funded by the Research England Policy Support Fund, the goal of this project is to undertake the research of colonial legacies within zoo interpretive displays so as to identify hidden histories and biases in perspectives/representation with the aim of informing policy guidance.
Using an ongoing zoo case study and drawing on system processes in the cultural heritage sector, you will develop a framework to identify and catalogue the complexity of information displayed, including guidance on mapping processes required to identify and engage groups and individuals linked in the production of zoo interpretive resources. You will lead on the co-creation of framework policy guidance with the relevant professional body, whilst orchestrating the organisation of external activities and writing of research outputs.
You should have knowledge of decolonising narratives and/or ethical inclusive practices in ecology and conservation. An awareness of current debates in cultural heritage sectors (e.g. decolonising museums) or the field conservation sector (e.g. parachute science) is preferred.
