Job Introduction

An opportunity is available for a Distribution System Operator Forecasting Analyst based at Tipton, Bristol, Cardiff or Castle Donington within the Secondary System Modelling Team.

The team is responsible for the production and maintenance of NGED’s load forecasting processes. The team provides support to teams within National Grid involved in System Planning and providing insight on how customers will use the distribution network in future. This role will report to the DSO Head of System Planning.

*Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

As part of our hybrid working approach this role offers a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.

Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

If you are offered a position, you will be required to successfully complete a basic DBS check that shows any unspent convictions or conditional cautions.

Main responsibilities

The primary areas of responsibility are Data Analysis, Process Development, Communication and Data Assurance and include the following:

Producing internal & external reports and datasets including provision of data for Local Authorities, large customers and other stakeholders requiring scenario based projections. Assist with the development of processes to utilise smart meter data and distribution substation monitor data into System Planning activities. Support the DSO Engineers in the System Planning team in the regular creation of datasets from core internal systems to support engagement with stakeholders and implement. Liaising with internal teams and computer systems to extract and import data for analysis purposes. Proactively working with the data owners and maintainers to continually improve data quality, accuracy and system integration. Proactively investigate and resolve data issues and assisting with the investigation of anomalies arising from the data or its processing. Use of GIS mapping software to generate maps and geographic datasets for internal and external reports and publication on the NGED website. Providing administrative support to the team when required. Flexible and able to pick up wider System Planning work when required.

Ideal candidate

You should be self-motivated, inquisitive and demonstrate a clear knowledge of the principles and issues associated with data extraction, data processing, data storage, data manipulation and data anomalies.

The successful candidate should hold a HNC or equivalent in a subject that demonstrates high quality analytical reasoning.

An understanding of SQL, GIS software and Python is desirable. A general understanding of the electricity industry and the role it plays in local and national decarbonisation targets would be beneficial. You should be able to demonstrate sound numeracy and literacy skills and good interpersonal/communication skills.

The ability to present information in a clear and reasoned way, together with an open yet analytical approach to problem solving are essential to the role. Excellent computer skills including Word and Excel are essential and knowledge of large database applications are also desirable. You must be reliable, well organised and be able to work effectively as part of a small team and able to work using your own initiative.
