Job summary

The pathologists all undertake subspecialist areas of reporting and there is flexibility to accommodate the incumbent of this post in a number of subspecialist areas by mutual agreement, depending on the individual's interests and departmental needs.

Renal biopsies, lymphoma, sarcoma and medical liver biopsies are reported by a limited number of pathologists. There is currently subspecialist reporting of most other areas including breast, upper and lower gastrointestinal, urological, thoracic, head & neck and hepato-pancreatico-biliary specimens.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to develop areas of subspecialisation and join the relevant reporting teams related to those areas. Coronial post mortem work is available for interested applicants; however, it is not mandatory

There may be an opportunity for a mutually agreed re-organisation amongst the present pathologists current areas of specialist interest to allow the incumbent to become lead pathologist in an area of interest. Participation in the reporting of some of the following areas would be particularly welcomed: soft tissue pathology, thoracic pathology, uropathology, gastrointestinal pathology, head & neck pathology, medical liver and /or renal biopsies

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

Full (1) and specialist registration (2) (and a licence to practice) with the GMC (or eligible for registration within six months of interview). Applicants that are UK trained must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CTT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. FRCPath II

Desirable

M/FRCP (1) and/or equivalent (1) Management experience (1) or formal management training (2) Enthusiasm for, and experience of, teaching medical students.

Management

Essential

Experience of working within the NHS management structure as an observer (1), specialty trainee (2), or previous consultant post (3).

Desirable

Evidence of ability and substantial experience in laboratory management

Clincial Skills and experience

Essential

Thorough knowledge and extensive experience of general diagnostic Histopathology

Desirable

Interested in the following histopathology subspecialties: soft tissue; thoracic; urology; head & neck; medical renal; medical liver.

Teaching

Essential

Ability and recent evidenced experience of teaching medical students (1), specialty trainees (2) and other professional groups (3)

Research & Clinical Audit

Essential

Recent evidence of audit in clinical practice (1). Evidence of participation within national audit (2).

Desirable

Evidence of continuing research with publications in peer-reviewed journals Interest and experience in clinical trials reporting Evidence of involvement in recent quality improvement projects.

Interpersonal Skills

Essential

An evidence-based record of working within a multi-disciplinary team (1). Established good working relationships with colleagues (2). Communicates effectively in written and spoken English (1). Communicates without spelling and/or grammatical errors (2).

Desirable

Demonstrates good leadership qualities and provides evidence of recent leadership roles.
