As a trainee EMHP you willbe joining a diverse team offering both clinical and non-clinical support tochildren, young people, and their families across Swindon.

You will work in partnership with school/collegemental health leads by developing a Whole School and College Approach to mentalhealth within your allocated schools.

Main duties of the job

To complete your training year through theuniversity of Exeter by supporting you to develop your clinical interventionskills within the MHST enabling you to deliver direct practice within yourallocated schools across Swindon (The university course will be a mixture ofteaching delivered online or via a hybrid model of online and face to faceclasses in Exeter and Bristol).You will work in collaboration with otherEMHPs, CWPs and mental health professionals, supervisors to deliver 1:1interventions, groups, parent led interventions, work- shops and stafftraining.

To assess and deliver outcome focused, low intensity,evidence-based interventions in educational settings for children and youngpeople experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties, working at alltimes in collaboration with and giving respect to the education function of thesetting in which the post-holder is deployed.

To help children andyoung people within these settings who present with as needing more support torapidly access more specialist services by engaging with more senior staff inthe signposting of referrals.

As part of the course, you will learn about and support the WholeSchool Approach to mental health and wellbeing.

Job responsibilities

You will be required to proficiently completethe mental health practice in education settings training as either a post-graduate or under -graduate and you will need to meet the entry requirementsdetailed in the attached successful completion of the trainee EMHPcourse, which is a full- time role funded at NHS Band 4 or equivalent you willbe able to achieve a band 5 or equivalent position within the team.

Therapeutic Assessment andIntervention

Work in partnership to supportchildren and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental healthdifficulties and their parents/carers, families, and educators in theself-management of presenting difficulties.

Work in effective, evidence-basedpartnership with children, young people, their families and their educators inthe development of plans for the intervention and agreed outcomes.

Support and empower children,young people, their parents/carers and families and their educators to makeinformed choices about the interventions being offered.

Operate at all times, from aninclusive values base, which recognises and respects diversity.

Accept referrals withineducational settings according to agreed local and national and localprotocols.

Undertake and record accurateassessments of risk and operate clear risk management processes in line withlocally agreed procedures including the safeguarding protocols of theeducational setting and Local Safeguarding Board guidance.

Adhere to all regulations,processes, and procedures within the educational service to which the postholder is attached and within the organization where the post-holder isemployed including (but not limited to) HR policies, training requirements, referral protocols, andemergency procedures. Signpostreferrals of children with more complex needs to a locally identifiedappropriate relevant service.

Under supervision and any otherrelevant local pathway, escalate cases where the level of need or risk isbeyond the scope of practice of the post holder.

Provide a range of information andsupport for evidence based psychological treatments, primarily guidedself-help.

Practice, evidence and demonstratean ability to manage ones own caseload in conjunction with the requirements ofthe team.

Attend multi-disciplinary andmulti-agency meetings relating to referrals or children and young people intreatment, where appropriate.

Keep clear, professionallycoherent records of all activity in line with both health and education serviceprotocols and use these records and outcome data to inform decision making.

Complete all requirements relatingto data collection.

Assess and integrate issuesrelating to transitions, education, and training/employment into the overalltherapeutic process.

Work within a collaborativeapproach involving a range of relevant others when indicated.

Contribute to the development ofindividual or group clinical materials or training materials, and in additionto develop such materials independently as falls within own degree ofcompetence, and under direction of the wider team.

Training and Supervision

Continue to apply learning gainedon the training program directly to practice.

Prepare and present case loadinformation to supervisors within the service on an agreed and scheduled basisto ensure safe practice and the governance obligations of the EMHP, supervisorand service are delivered.

Respond to and implementsupervision suggestions by supervisors in practice.

Engage in and respond to personaldevelopment supervision to improve competences and practice.

To disseminate research andservice evaluation findings in appropriate formats through agreed channels.

Qualifications

Essential

Post graduate route (level 7) Education to Honours degree level to 2:2 or above Graduate route (level 6) Proven successful study at level 5 academic experience alongside experiential experience or successful part completion of an Honours degree level 6.

Experience

Essential

Direct work with children, young people and families. Applying safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures and promoting the welfare of children. Working with other professionals and of challenging professional judgements as appropriate. Staff supervision.

Desirable

Experience of working with children and their families with mental health difficulties Experience of monitoring and recording outcome measures for childrens emotional wellbeing. Experience of working with other vulnerable groups.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

Knowledge of children and young people gained through academic study in child development, child wellbeing or mental health. Knowledge of educational environments Highly developed knowledge of child and adult safeguarding. Understanding of MHSTs role in supporting children and young people

Desirable

Knowledge of the functional operation of specialist CAMHS teams. Knowledge of capacity and consent issues including Gillick competence. Ability to conduct other group therapeutic interventions with children and their families. Proven commitment to continuous professional development.
