A brilliant opportunity has arisen for an experienced Paediatric Phlebotomist to do bank work in our Paediatric Phlebotomy service.
Main duties of the job
Working strictly in accordance with guidelinesand protocols, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepunctureto obtain blood samples from patients referred by Hillingdon General Practiceswho work with The Confederation.

Job description
Job responsibilities
To be able to collect blood samples frompatients ages 2-13(as per the spec). Ensuring that the patient is as comfortable andrelaxed as possible. Ensure consentfor venepuncture is sought from the parent and/or patient, where applicable. Collection of samples of blood in accordancewith training and procedures. Ensuring samples are stored in appropriatecontainers. Accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirmpatient identity. Checking patient identification againstGP/nurse request and confirming with patient whenever possible. Recording collection of blood sample in patientrecord in accordance with procedure. Ensuring that samples are dispatched to theappropriate laboratories in a timely fashion. Ensuring that anomalies are reported to asenior member of staff. Notifying the GP/nurse of any significantpatient issues. Liaising with and assisting members of theadministrative team. Work effectively within the team. Standard Maintenance. Report any clinical or environmental issues ofconcern and take action to rectify these where appropriate. Ensure a working knowledge and compliance withPolicies and Procedures. Check and re-stock clinical rooms (including specimen bottles, holders, syringes, needles, andspecimen bags). Comply with infection prevention and controlprocedures. Keep clinical areas clean and free fromclutter. Keep mandatory training up to date, includingInformation Governance. Input information into the clinical system asappropriate following appropriate training. Communicate effectively with other team members.Communicate effectively with patients andcarers.
Recognize peoples needs for alternativemethods of communication and respond accordingly, including use of interpreters. Alert other team members to issues of qualityand risk. Assess own performance and take accountabilityfor own actions, either directly or under supervision Contribute to theeffectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activities and makingsuggestions on ways to improve and enhance the teams performance. Work effectively with individuals in otheragencies to meet patients needs. Effectively manage own time, workload, andresources. In the course of seeking treatment, patientsentrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation totheir health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right toexpect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately. In the performance of the duties outlined inthis Job Description, the postholder may have access to confidentialinformation relating to patients and their carers, staff and other healthcareworkers. They may also have access to information relating to the businessorganisation. At least 2 years experience of taking adult bloods Experience of working within the NHS, with public & team working Well-developed IT skills and an enthusiasm for new applications and software Good time management and highly organised Ability to use initiative, judgement, resourcefulness, common sense, and local knowledge Interest in quality improvement work Able to obtain and analyse complex technical information Recognises priorities when problem solving and identifies deviations from the normal pattern and can refer to seniors when appropriate Able to work under pressure and to meet deadlines. Experience working within primary care Work effectively independently and as a team member Demonstrates accountability for delivering professional expertise and direct service provision
