Contract: Permanent Location: Hybrid home-working model with regular travel in Buckinghamshire  Buckinghamshire Mind is seeking a Team Lead to supervise and support a Mental Health Safety Planning Outreach Support Workers and work alongside the Bucks Safe Haven team and team leaders.  The service will support the mental health and wellbeing of people at risk by safety planning and utilising support networks.  As the Lead of this team, you’ll naturally have skills in working with mental health issues and assessing individual’s needs, together with interventions and signposting to relevant community services.  You’ll also have the ability to inspire and motivate others and to run a high-quality service.

In addition to your skills and experience working with people with serious mental health issues and leading a team, you’ll also have strong interpersonal skills to work with other health professionals, and you’ll be well organised to manage your diary and your reporting requirements. 

As this role is based in the community with travel between several locations, you’ll need access to a vehicle for use during work hours. Alternative transport arrangements will be considered.

Key ResponsibilitiesPurpose of role The aim of the Mental Health Safety Planning Outreach Team Lead is to provide high quality line management, support, and supervision to one Mental Health Safety Planning Outreach workers in addition to working collaboratively with the Bucks Safe Haven teams and Buckinghamshire Mind Operational Manager.   The Team Lead will have their own caseload alongside coordinating the Mental Health Outreach workers.  The service is designed to provide a short-term community and remote based intervention to provide listening support and develop Safety Plans with Service Users, and in addition aid the Service Users to locate and utilise support networks both within and external to the community.   Follow up support will then be provided either remotely or within the community to reconnect with the individual to check if the safety plan is helpful and further develop where appropriate.   The Safety Plan interventions will focus on support options in the person’s own community, drawing from Third Sector Serviced, Local Authority provision and Primary Health Care services.   With the support of the Mental Health Safety Plan Outreach Worker, a full and completed safety plan that is individually focused and holistic will be agreed upon and stored in the relevant clinical documentation system and a hard copy sent to the GP and referral source.  The Mental Health Safety Planning Outreach Team Lead will work in collaboration with Bucks Safe Haven Service and other community resources and must have a skill set in developing relationships to achieve the desired outcomes of: 
  • Promote connection and reduce isolation  
  • Improve coping skills 
  • Signpost and refer to other services and sources of support 
  • Provide educational strategies to help with difficulties that triggered self-harm. 
The service will not provide psychological therapy but there may be the need to provide some crisis support, however it is not an emergency service.   Responsibilities  A         Operational and line management
  • Overall line management responsibility for the successful delivery and smooth running of the Mental Health Safety Planning Outreach Service.
  • Coach and support team of Mental Health Safety Planning and Outreach workers in their provision of high-quality advice, well-being focused interventions, and emotional support to individuals who are referred to the service. 
  • Ensure that effective risk assessment and safety planning is carried out. 
  • Liaise with the Operations Manager to manage more complex operational issues within the service. 
  • Lead and support practice development within the team and provide mentoring to team members as required.  
  • Act as a source of support, advice, and expertise to staff on matters of Safeguarding and making appropriate referrals by liaising with the designated Buckinghamshire Mind Safeguarding lead. 
  • Ensure data and qualitative information is collected and collated as required and directed by the Operations Manager. 
  • Ensure that the service is effectively informed by service user feedback with established links to the Buckinghamshire Mind Service User Council. 
  • Keep up to date with best practice and contribute to the continuous improvement of the service; contribute to the smooth running of the service as a whole.
  • Monitor the quality of the service and ensure appropriate data is collected (in line with GDPR) to monitor outputs and outcomes.
B         Supporting Service Users
  • Carry out initial assessments and maintain accurate case records within the required data collection and reporting system. 
  • Provide emotional support to individuals referred to the Mental Health Safety Planning Service. 
  • Utilise the online Bucks Mind Guide to help people to develop self-management strategies and to make the best use of the local resources around them, signposting or making referrals as required. 
  • Ensure the wellbeing and safety of service users, reporting any concerns to your line manager. 
  • Ensure Safeguarding concerns are responded to appropriately in line with Buckinghamshire Mind’s Safeguarding Policies. 
  • Communicate effectively with team members ensuring that relevant information is passed on appropriately. 
  • Ensure that the referral pathway is made aware of recommendations so that they can be followed up, Including MHICS teams and/or GP. 
  • Update and progress by accessing electronic patient records. 
C         Supervision, training, meetings and support
  • Prepare for and attend regular individual and group supervisions.
  • Be proactive in reviewing and evaluating personal performance and identifying areas for improvement and development; participate in annual personal review meetings.
  • Attend training as appropriate and show a willingness to undertake professional development opportunities relevant to the role.  
  • Attend and participate in team meetings and other meetings as required. 
  • Attend meeting when advised with BHFT representative to review referrals.  
D         Other 
  • Work within Buckinghamshire Mind’s and Berkshire Mind’s policies and procedures including Performance Management, Confidentiality, Safeguarding, Equal Opportunities, Service User Involvement, Health and Safety and the Professional Boundaries policy. 
  • Keep informed about other projects, events and related issues regarding Buckinghamshire and Berkshire Mind. 
  • Inform Buckinghamshire Mind colleagues if Mind Guide information needs revising or if any additional services are identified for inclusion. 
  • Keep line manager up to date and informed. 
  • Work in a flexible way to take on other responsibilities as appropriate. 
 
Skills, Knowledge and ExpertiseEssential
  • Educated to A’ level or equivalent, or similar level of education gained through CPD.
  • Experience responding to and working with trauma, emotional crisis, safety planning and suicide prevention. 
  • Experience of working with adults in the mental health sector or in a similar support or care giving role. 
  • Knowledge of social and situational factors influencing adults’ mental health, recovery and wellbeing.
  • Ability to motivate, encourage and work individually with people to identify potential and support recovery. 
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively to high-risk situations which may include self-harm or suicide ideation. 
  • Strong level of ability to develop and deliver a high-quality service.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and manage time effectively. 
  • Excellent team management skills and a high level of ability to support and supervise staff.
  • Ability to support and coach staff to develop professional boundaries with vulnerable adults. 
  • High level of ability to develop positive and constructive relationships with external agencies.  
Desirable
  • Experience of working with external stakeholders e.g. Care Teams, Commissioners/Funders, Community Groups.
  • Understanding and knowledge of other mental health and related services, both voluntary and statutory. 
IT, Communication and Interpersonal skills  Essential
  • Good level of IT skills including Microsoft Office and Outlook. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills especially with people who experience/have experienced mental health issues.
  • Able to network and build sustainable working partnerships with volunteers, staff and other agencies.
Desirable
  • Able to work creatively, looking at new possibilities, bringing new ideas to the team and respond appropriately to the needs and views of both current and potential service users.
