Job summary

We are looking for an ambitious, self-motivated and committed Pharmacist to join our dynamic, forward thinking team working within our radiopharmacy department.

You will work as part of a larger multi-disciplinary team who make a real difference to patient care and clinical research across our trust and the region.

Main duties of the job

This is a varied role where you will complete many different tasks on a day to day basis. These will involve:

- Working with the Accountable Pharmacist to ensure effective operation of the quality management system

- Liaising closely with the Specialist radiopharmacy Technicians supporting the management of the workload, ensuring the unitis fully functional

- Working closely with the Accountable Pharmacist to support the training of all staff across the department. To support and co-ordinate all rotational pharmacist and scientist training required within Radiopharmacy

- Working with the accountable pharmacist to liaise with the variety of clinical teams that use the nuclear medicine service

To be responsible for the daily supervision of Radiopharmaceutical dispensing within the Radiopharmacy in the Bexley Wing.

and Aseptic Dispensing Services and to provide professional support to the department when required.

About us

The Radiopharmacy is located within the Nuclear Medicine department in Bexley Wing of St Jamess hospital. It operates as an unlicensed aseptic dispensary under Section 10 exemption, supervised by a Site Lead Radiopharmacist and Accountable Associate Lead Clinician Pharmacist who is also a specialist radiopharmacist.

The service provides a comprehensive range of aseptically dispensed radiopharmaceuticals doses required for diagnostic imaging purposes to patients of the Trust and the surrounding area. The product range includes Tc99m labelled pharmaceuticals and a range of other isotopes ordered on a named patient basis (~7500 doses per annum), Oral and IV Therapy doses (~500 per annum) and physics QA (~500 per annum)

Job responsibilities

To be named as a pharmacist responsible for the provision of radioactive medicinal products on applications by Consultant Radiologists working for the Trust, to the Administration of Radioactive Substances Advisory Committee (ARSAC) for ARSAC licenses.

Manage the technical and ancillary staff based at St James Hospital who provide radiopharmacy services to the nuclear medicine speciality.

To participate in the co-ordination of training of pharmacists,pharmacists, scientists, technical and ancillary staff and other healthcare professionals on aspects of drug use within the clinical and service speciality

Responsible for all pharmacist training matters within the radiopharmacy dispensing service

Provide the daily professional service cover in the radiopharmacy dispensary and cover within the aseptic dispensary when required. Participates in the weekend rota and where appropriate the out of hours service.

To provide pharmaceutical and managerial input into the Radiopharmacy Service. This will include:-

Participate in the development of the radiopharmacy service and policy implementation ensuring funding is secured for service developments through business cases and negotiation with stakeholders outside pharmacy.

Develop effective working relationships with senior clinical managers within the multidisciplinary Nuclear Medicine Team.

To ensure that radiopharmacy activities are carried out in accordance with all current standard operating procedures and are compliant current legislation for working with Ionising Radiation

Sign ARSAC license applications as the pharmacist responsible for the provision of radioactive medicinal products when required by the Accountable Pharmacist

Working with the Preparative Management and Quality Assurance teams the job holder will be involved in developing, implementing and monitoring procedures which will ensure that the service complies with appropriate standards

To be responsible for individual performances through the setting of objectives, PDPs and appraisals

To ensure that all major plant and equipment items within the radiopharmacy dispensing units are maintained and maintenance records kept for audit purposes

To participate in audit and service reviews and to ensure appropriate action is taken to improve the service when required

To be responsible for ensuring that radiopharmacy dispensing activities under your supervision comply with section 10 exemption of the Medicines Act 1968

Participate in the training of pharmacists, scientists, technicians and ancillary staff and other healthcare workers in all aspects of dispensing radiopharmaceuticals

Develop the role of the specialist radiopharmacist through links with the UK Radiopharmacy Group and the British nuclear Medicine Society

Knowledge and understanding of the principals of Good Aseptic Dispensing Practice and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Knowledge and understanding of current radiation leglisation

Experience

Minimum 4 years( 5 years preferred) experience of working in a hospital pharmacy aseptic dispensing, manufacturing or radiopharmacy unit 2 years of managerial responsibilities. Evidence of planning and development successes Evidence of involvement in service developments

Qualifications

MPharm,MPharmS, or MSc Pharmacy degree Member of Royal Pharmaceutical Society of great Britain Post Graduate technical diploma or equivalent experience

Postgraduate management qualification Post-graduate MSc/Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent experience.
