The Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Service welcomes applications for a Band 5 Assistant Psychologist WTE), which is a temporary post until June 5 to cover maternity leave.

This post offers the exciting and rare opportunity to gain experience of working in a democratic Therapeutic Community in the NHS as part of a well-established specialist Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Service in Derby.

The term ‘Therapeutic Community’ is usually used in the UK to describe small cohesive communities where patients have a significant involvement in decision-making and the practicalities of running the programme. Based on ideas of collective responsibility, citizenship and empowerment, Therapeutic Communities are deliberately structured in a way that encourages personal responsibility and avoids unhelpful dependency on professionals.

The Therapeutic Community at present meets 3 days a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The programme involves community groups, an MBT group, an analytic group, and an art therapy group. There are plans to develop a step-down group and a prep group and the successful applicant can be involved in developing this.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work in the Therapeutic Community up to 3 days per week, supporting clinical group work. They will also provide support to Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Service as a whole, for example undertaking audits, processing outcome measure data, and other related activities.

They will work under the regular supervision and guidance of a Consultant Clinical Psychologist as well as receiving supervision regarding the Therapeutic Community with the rest of the programme staff. This will be a post that will be exceptionally beneficial to the successful candidate’s ability to work with groups and systems in the NHS.

Working for our organisation

We are a supportive department with a strong commitment to continuing professional development and training. The service as a whole has been in operation for over years and has a rich history offering group and individual psychotherapy, and group work for people with severe and complex presentations, and an educational setting for the training of psychotherapists.

There is a strong Division of Psychology and Psychological Therapies within the Trust which facilitates regular specialised supervision and training, leads on the development of trauma informed practice, encourages personal and professional development, and has good links with the regional training courses.

The Trust is incredibly supportive of their work force and go above and beyond to ensure staff are being looked after and feel supported.

The successful candidate will be greeted by glorious countryside and a compassionate team who support each other and enjoy meeting up for food and entertainment.
