Are you someone who has a science degree, or equivalent, and are interested in using science for healthcare? We are looking to recruit a Clinical Technologist within our Radiation Physics department.

We are a small team who provide expert scientific and technical support to users of medical imaging within the beautiful setting of North Wales. Our role is to ensure that radiological imaging equipment is optimised and safe to use in hospitals and dental clinics in a large variety of geographic locations all across Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, (BCUHB)

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be required to carry out surveys of medical diagnostic radiology equipment across a range of both clinical and geographic locations. Examples of the medical equipment tested include general radiographic equipment, both digital and computed radiography, mobile fluoroscopic and dental machines. Surveys will be conducted both independently and working with other members of the Radiation Physics Section. We will provide you with practical in-house training. Due to the requirement of transporting heavy test equipment to surveys across BCUHB, a current UK valid driving licence is essential (please confirm within application) and access to a car would be advantageous.

The duties include:

·Scheduling and performing tests.

·Driving across a wide range of geographical locations

·Analysis of results.

·Creating reports with the use of MS Office applications (most frequently Word & Excel).

·Performing practical tasks that support the delivery of the staff dose monitoring programme.

·Participating in environmental shielding checks of radiation facilities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Radiation Physics

Provide technical support to Departments for equipment testing, in compliance with statutory safety Regulations and approved Guidance.

Act as ‘Operator’ under Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IRMER ) for the practical aspect of Quality Assurance.

Carry out commissioning and acceptance testing of imaging equipment ( Dental x-ray equipment, mobile and fixed installations for radiography, image receptors). Commissioning includes assessment of performance, calibration, radiation safety aspects of the equipment and measurement of environmental factors.

Carry out Routine testing of equipment in accordance with published guidance.

Independently (on behalf of other Section staff responsible for the overall survey) carry out Routine Testing of dental x-ray, mobile and fixed radiographic equipment, and prepare results for reporting.

Assist in Routine Testing of all categories of other equipment covered by the section.

Carry out ad hoc surveys and investigations as required following repairs or incidents.

Carry out Dose Area Product (DAP) Meter calibrations, and prepare results for user departments. This work involves the adjustment of instruments for recording radiation doses delivered to patients.

Radiation Protection

Assist in radiation protection surveys of departments, environment and equipment, working in Radiation Controlled Areas and establishing and managing temporary Controlled Areas.

Carry out function checks of radiation measurement equipment including radiation monitoring equipment, Electronic Personal Dosemeters (EPD) and test equipment used in the work of the Section, and in user departments. 

Arrange despatch and return of test equipment to calibration laboratories, suppliers, repairers, etc. and ensure availability for use by all Radiation staff.

Receive from Approved Dosimetry Services (ADS), issue, collect and despatch to ADSs, personal dosimeters. Receive, collate and file records of movements and dose results for personal dosimeters. Prepare annual summary reports of personal monitoring results for spring meetings of Radiation Protection Committees.

Forward to ADS, monitoring results from other ADS for non-Classified workers for collation into personal records.

Maintain database for Radiation Workers who work for Multiple Employers and/or Multiple Sites. (IRR)

Management

Keep careful records of all work performed, update databases as required and keep other appropriate records as required for statistical purposes.

Teaching / research

Assist with the development of new techniques in conjunction with other staff groups.

Assist in the production of material to be used for clinical meetings, presentations or for training.

Professional

Maintain professional skills.

Attend suitable seminars and courses as part of training and personal development and to further the work of the Department.

Ensure all activities are carried out within a quality framework and conform to Statutory Regulations, approved Codes of Practice, Local Safety Rules and Quality Manual Procedures.

Miscellaneous

When working in other departments, the appointee will behave courteously and professionally at all times and seek to ensure that the highest level of service is provided by Medical Physics and the BCU values are adhered to.

Occasionally, perform duties outside the normal working hours of the Department, in order to complete work efficiently. 

Undertake contractual work with firms and organisations outside the NHS as required by the Head of Section.

Perform other appropriate duties which may be required from time to time by the Head of Radiation Physics or Director of Medical Physics

Person specification Qualification and Knowledge Essential criteria Able to travel across sites with heavy bulky equipment in a timely UK Degree or equivalent. Desirable criteria Knowledge of Radiation Protection principles and practice Knowledge of diagnostic x-ray equipment operation, imaging modalities, inspection, radiation safety, quality assurance and patient dose measurements. Knowledge of clinical applications of Medical Radiation equipment Experience Essential criteria Experience in using IT packages for records, calculations, graphs, and managing information. Work/other experience that shows a willingness to learn and a commitment to multidisciplinary team based working. Desirable criteria Knowledge of equipment testing and calibration techniques. Experience of working with test equipment & fault-finding. Experience in using specialist laboratory test equipment for calibration and safety testing. Skills and Attributes Essential criteria Ability to resolve problems Able to manoeuvre weight up to approx. kg (transporting equipment to other sites) and exert moderate physical effort Able to work methodically and reliably to protocols and maintain demonstrable standards Able to concentrate frequently when subject to unpredictable working patterns, including multiple interruptions, shared office Ability to learn and use a range of software applications and database systems. Desirable criteria Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Word, Excel. Basic level skills in Access. Manual dexterity for positioning measurement equipment. Attention to detail and focus on precision. Ability to follow instructions and standard operating procedures
