Overview

We are seeking a Research Software Engineer with expertise in software development and an aptitude for research in the field of cloud data storage applications.

This is a two-year fixed-term post-doctoral position and is part of our Cambridge Residency programme within the Cloud Systems Futures research group. The Project Silica team is researching a revolutionary new technique to store data in glass using lasers, and read it using optical imaging, and our multi-disciplinary team innovates in all fields from the materials science to the cloud architecture.

This position is for a highly proficient computer scientist or software engineer who would like to work in a research setting, and who will have the opportunity to impact the progress of this exciting new storage system. You would be responsible for contributing across all aspects of our research prototypes, from software systems that control research equipment to cloud based processing pipelines that that analyse results.

Qualifications

Required qualifcations

PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent training and experience in research. Excellent software design and implementation skills. Master of computer science fundamentals (e.g., concurrency, data-structures). Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with python, e.g. numpy etc. Knowledge of scientific computing e.g. image processing techniques. Experience working with or interfacing to hardware. Experience with cloud systems, e.g. Microsoft Azure. Able to work independently towards only partly-defined tasks interacting with others in the team to clarify needs and iterate quickly.

Responsibilities

Design and implement new features to support research experiments. Collaborate with other disciplines to inform and achieve research goals. Work closely with scientists to understand the hypotheses and contribute the software components that will enable the research impact. Improve and maintain cloud-based results analysis.
