An Introduction to the Specialty

TheEmergency Medicine Service is delivered on two sites within the Trust with thePinderfields hospital site designated as a Major Trauma Unit, Dewsbury is alocal ED and Pontefract was one of the first Urgent Treatment Centres inEngland. Our multi-disciplinary team of dedicated and committed professionalsprovide high quality care and treatment in what is, when combined across thethree hospitals, consistently ranked as one of the top five busiest Urgent and EmergencyMedicine services in England handling around 250,000 attendances each year.

Themajority of our Consultant team have developed special interests and have beengiven the time to chase their own passions and interests. This allows them to really support ourclinical fellows in developing their own special interests as theyve alreadybeen there.

Outlinedbelow are some of the things we are proud of as a service:

We are an AssociateTeaching Hospital and have won national awards for the quality of ourundergraduate Emergency Medicine teaching programme.

Were closely involved in the West YorkshireAcceleration Zone looking at trialling different projects to improve our EmergencyCare Standard performance.

Were part of the MERIT programme and take part inregular exercises to practise dealing with major incidents. The last oneinvolved setting up an Advanced Casualty Clearing Station (ACCS) close to amajor shopping centre as part of an exercise looking at emergency response fora terrorist incident. Ours is the only region in the country which has a MERITresponse like this, meaning we are one of only five acute trusts in the countrywhich undertakes these types of response and sends a team to an ACCS. We doincident training every three years in terms of live exercising and all the EDstaff get the opportunity to do a table-top exercise each year.

The Trust has spent the last three years reconfiguringservices across its hospitals Pinderfields, Dewsbury and Pontefract one ofthe largest reconfiguration projects in the country.

Weve been involved in the first few of an ongoingseries of Rapid Process Improvement Workshops (RPIW). These have been instigatedas part of a new Quality Improvement Process for the Trust and they are basedon the world-renowned Virginia Mason lean production methodologies.

We have a great track record in developing our doctors and providingrobust educational opportunities for all staff within the service.

The Service Role

These posts will be part of our cross-sitetrainee rota, which is compliant with working time regulations and the 2016junior doctors contract, averaging 48 hours per week.

Acute care at Mid-Yorkshire is nowfocussed primarily on our Pinderfields Hospital site although all our doctorsare involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites, with support andsupervision from senior colleagues.

The main duties of the post willinclude:

Terms& Conditions and Tenure

Employmentwill be as a MYDoc Registrar on Trust Terms and Conditions of Service.

The MYDoc Trust Registrar posts areinitially offered on a fixed term contract for 12 months after this extensionon a mutually agreed basis is possible.

Pay Scale

These roles are equivalent to a doctor on specialty training programmesand will be paid on the equivalent pay scale. The basic salary for thisrole is £61,825 per annum.

The MYDocTraining Programme Educational Input & Recognition

Doctors appointed to a MYDoc post will receiverelevant educational input. Each doctor will beallocated an Educational Supervisor and will be required to develop aPersonalised Work Schedule.

The weeklytimetable should include a balance of these activities appropriate to yourgrade, role and training requirements.You are required to maintain a dialogue with your Clinical andEducational Supervisor to ensure the balance of these activities meets yourdevelopmental needs.

Whilst not a recognised training post Doctors successfully completing their training programme willbe awarded a Certificate of Achievement from the Trust. Doctors will use established work-placebased assessment (WPBA) tools to chart progress and keep relevant evidencein an electronic portfolio system. There will be an annual review of progress based on evidence within theportfolios including the WPBA, 360 assessment, personal reflections and CPD,covering both clinical, personal and professional development, and aCertificate of Achievement (appropriate to that year/level of training) will beissued.

Pre-registration/foundation training and appropriate experience in recognised training-grade posts relevant to EM at junior doctor level or above minimum 3 years including adequate experience in Emergency Medicine ( minimum 6 months). Notes 1) an otherwise exceptional candidate with excellent critical care/acute care skills might be considered with only 4 months EM experience

Qualifications

Essential

Medical Degree from recognised medical school ATLS,ALS,APLS or PALS certification
