Job summary

Applicantsare invited to apply for a Clinical/Research Fellow (Trust Doctor) in Trauma& Orthopaedics at Leeds General Infirmary.

The successful candidate would take a leading role inthe organisation of clinical activities and delivery of clinical trials inpartnership with key clinical staff.They will also be the point of reference for medical staff, management,foundations, and external funding organisations. The successful candidate will need attend asrequired, the courses organised by the department and occasionally to presentat national and international meetings, the overall research portfolio of theunit.

Main duties of the job

Thepostholder will assist in the delivery of accurate high-quality data inpartnership with key clinical staff and deliver end-user training in the use ofdepartmental database systems to ensure the level of data quality ismaintained.

Allorthopaedic trauma patients are admitted to the Leeds General Infirmary. Particular specialist services provided arepelvic and acetabular reconstruction, spinal injuries, open fractures, postinjury limb reconstruction and complex fracture work. There is a specific interest in polytrauma,and many peripheral trauma units refer most of their multiple injuries straightto Leeds General Infirmary on day one.

The post is designed to support the research/clinicalactivities of this well-established trauma service. The referral base is continuing to developand grow and forms the basis of the new Trauma Centre at Leeds GeneralInfirmary.

About us

TheDepartment of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery provides Trauma and Electiveservices to Leeds residents and beyond.

Thein-hospital services provided at the Major Trauma Centre of the Yorkshire andHumber regional trauma network, are led by 10 of the 34 Consultants of theTrauma and Orthopaedic Department.

TheMajor Trauma Services cover the adult and paediatric population of WestYorkshire of more than million, admitting an average of more than 1,100TARN approved trauma cases (Less then 600 of ISS Equal or lower then16).

Atertiary referral service is provided for spine and scoliosis surgery, pelvicand acetabular reconstruction, paediatric acute and elective surgery, limbreconstruction, complex brachial plexus and upper extremity surgery.

Job responsibilities

Thispost is designed to support the Research Clinical activities of this well establishedtrauma service. The referral base iscontinuing to develop and grow and forms the basis of the new Trauma Centre atLeeds General Infirmary.

GeneralOrthopaedic services are currently provided from two sites in Leeds.Paediatric, hand surgery and spine surgery is provided at Leeds GeneralInfirmary. Complex and revision lowerlimb arthroplasty, upper limb and foot and ankle surgery are provided at ChapelAllerton Hospital.

LeedsGeneral Infirmary has 3 orthogeriatric wards, one major trauma polytrauma ward,one trauma ward, one paediatric ward including 2 paediatric HDU beds, onespinal surgery ward and a four bedded HDU shared with plastic surgery. Thereare 2 trauma theatres running all day lists, one major trauma polytraumatheatre and one spine theatre. Alltrauma outpatients are seen in a dedicated fracture clinic with supportingradiology facilities and the A&E Department are on the ground floor of thesame building.

DUTIESOF THE POST

Totake a leading role in the co ordination of the research activities of theT&O Department. The post holder will assist in the preparation of grantapplications, to facilitate the recruitment of patients in clinical trials, tosupport medical staff obtaining patient records, to organise the researchmeeting of the department, to maintain databases and to produce frequentreports reflecting the overall work ofthe unit. . In a sense, this person will be the point of reference for medicalstaff, management, foundations, external funding organisations

Thepost holder will also assist in outpatient clinics & theatre sessions.

Toattend as required the courses organised by the department and occasionally topresent at national and international meetings the overall research portfolioof the unit.

Toassist in the delivery of accurate high quality data in partnership with keyclinical staff and deliver end user training in the use of departmentaldatabase systems to ensure the level of data quality is maintained.

Thepost holder will work closely with Professor Giannoudis in the clinical settingand will be responsible for organising the monthly research meeting of thedepartment.

5 years experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice More than 2 years experience of Orthopaedic Surgery at ST3+ level t least 5 years experience in Surgical specialities by the time of intended start date
