Main duties of the job

The appointed post holder will be enthusiastic and driven in enhancing student experience through the quality of the practice learning environment. We welcome applicants who are Registered Nurses with the Nursing Midwifery Council with no exceptions on their registration.

The post holder will have the knowledge, experience and skills to enable contemporary contribution to our current pre-registration programmes and future programmes as relevant to expertise. They will have demonstrable expertise, experience and understanding of principles of learning and teaching in higher education. You must have significant experience in supervising and assessing nursing students in practice, partnership and strategic working and be able to engage in contemporary computer systems which support learning.

Your teaching will be informed by a combination of practical experience and/or research to support high quality learning and teaching, experience of using Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), and the use of technologies to enhance the learning, assessment of and feedback to our students.

Job responsibilities

Function of the Post:

Principal Accountabilities:

Learning and Teaching

Contribute to the planning, design and development of objectives and material based on the Standards for student supervision and assessment and teaching these to colleagues, students and partner organisations to ensure full compliance of the Regulators Educational standards. Collaborate with colleagues on the implementation of practice learning assessment procedures. Lead activities to ensure continual enhancement in student placement learning experiences involving programme leaders Undertake regular compliance audits and returns to stakeholders. Support colleagues in ensure that simulated practice learning teaching complies with the NMC educational standards In collaboration with Programme Leads allocate, lead and monitor on the provision and support of Academic Assessors ensuring NMC educational standards are maintained Lead on the development and support of placement support mechanisms both for students, practice partners and colleagues.

Research, scholarly and income generating activities

Engage with Head of School in establishing relevant contracts with placement learning providers. Develop and produce learning materials and disseminate the results of scholarly activity. Engage in and develop income generating activity applicable to the context of the school and with full discussion with the Head of School Prepare proposals and applications to external bodies, for funding and accreditation purposes. Strive to achieve national and/or international recognition for these activities.

Communication, liaison and networking

Working with the Head of School in relationship building and management with external stakeholders involved in workforce development and placement learning across NHS, Private, Independent and Voluntary organisations. Work collaboratively with placement administration team to continually enhance placement administration processes and to identify and implement enhancements to deliver outstanding inclusive student support. Take sole responsibility for scoping, securing and development practice learning placements to support courses in the School. Lead, deliver and monitor on the quality assurance processes for Nursing placements, ensuring robust reporting systems are maintained across internal and external partners. Communicate complex and conceptual ideas to external partners and consider methods to promote understanding. Communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature. Liaise with colleagues academic and professional services effectively and support programme leaders Participate in and develop internal and external networks ( internal and external committees), for example to contribute to placement learning and building relationships for future collaboration. Focus upon and explore ways to be and think together as educators that are positive and encouraging and empowering.

Teamwork

Co-ordinate and support other practice learning academic staff from other disciplines in shaping our cohesive quality assurance structure in the School. Act as a responsible team member, leading where agreed, and develop productive working relationships with other members of academic and professional services staff. Co-ordinate the work of colleagues to identify and respond to students needs. Lead on the accreditation of courses and quality control processes within the department relevant to practice learning. Contribute to and/or lead on team and departmental meetings and/or committees internally or externally. Contribute to the development of new systems and procedures. Work with colleagues and students to sustain and strengthen an inclusive, supportive, caring and authentic learning community.

Managing people

Depending on the area of work, the post holder could be expected to manage, co-ordinate and/or supervise the work of others. Support and mentor colleagues with less experience and advise on their personal development relating to teaching and/or research and/or income generation and taking account of relevant professional frameworks ( UK Professional Standards Framework and the Researcher Development Framework). Co-ordinate the work of others to ensure modules are delivered to the standards required. Undertake the role of Personal Tutor provided pastoral support to students and act as Academic Assessor for NMC purposes.

Pastoral care

Develop and use listening, interpersonal and pastoral care skills to act as first line support to students, referring them as appropriate to internal and external services providing further help and advice. Appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances. Support students in developing their resilience to be able to take responsibility and overcome the various challenges they will face including personal, economic, mental, physical etc.

Planning and managing resources

Manage projects relating to own area of work and/or outside the department. Be responsible for administrative duties in own areas such as admissions, time-tabling, examinations, assessment of progress and student attendance.

Work environment

Be aware of the risks in the work environment and their potential impact on areas of their own work and that of others. Depending on the area of work and level of training received, the post holder may be expected to conduct risk assessments and take responsibility for the health and safety of others.

Expertise

Possess breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop the curriculum, establish teaching programmes and the provision of learning support. Use a range of delivery techniques to enthuse and engage students. Balance the pressures of teaching and administrative demands and competing deadlines. Develop innovative and creative approaches when responding to teaching, learning and scholarship challenges.
