About me I am a 47-year-old gentleman. I am a tetraplegic, which basically means that I’m a full-time wheelchair user and I have total paralysis below my chest. I have limited hand function and require help with eating and drinking, preparing meals and all day-to-day activities. I’m also a Type 2 Diabetic and this is controlled with insulin injections plus prescribed tablets.

 I have a workshop/shed where I like to do woodwork projects and I like to go out in my garden whenever I’m able to and would require help carrying out weeding plus general garden maintenance. I like to use my hand-cycle that attaches to the front of my manual wheelchair. I enjoy the freedom and independence this gives me. I like to meet up with friends at the pub or go out for meals with them. It is important for me to remain as independent as possible and to have the continuity of regular, reliable live in support workers.

 

Hours and rate of Pay  Starting wage Day Rate £11.44

                                            Night Rate £12.50

                                            Sunday Rate £12.50

                                            Bank Holiday £15.00

Rates of pay dependent on experience. The post will include 5.6 weeks paid annual leave. An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check will be required.

 

what would you be doing…  • Supporting with personal care in a dignified manner, preparing meals and cooking - a diet appropriate for Type 2 diabetes is required. Maintaining a daily routine for the administration of medication. I require a support worker who is trained in administering insulin injections, however I monitor my own blood sugar levels. • Maintaining continence care is essential to reducing risk of an Autonomic Dysreflexia episode. The support worker would need to be trained in bowel management - digital stimulation and manual evacuation which I require every other day. I am at-risk of autonomic dysreflexia (AD) episode - which could be life threatening. This is why I require live-in support workers who are trained in bowel management. • I have a automatic car. It is important to me that I have support workers who are over 25 years for insurance purposes to enable me to get out of the house and to get to weekly hydrotherapy sessions/ shopping/Appointments/Socialising.. • Maintaining daily written records and undertaking any duties which may be reasonably allocated and fall within the scope and responsibility of the job. Undertaking any training as appropriate for the role.

 

The person I would like… Qualities I’m looking for with my Care team • Must establish a close working relationship on a one-to-one basis • Must have a can do attitude • Must be a live in support worker • Must be someone who is willing to go the extra mile to help me achieve my goals, supporting me to spend time in the garden, visit friends, use my hand cycle and help me with my woodwork. I have a bike that the support worker can use. • Must be happy to keep my home clean and tidy and appreciate they are living in my home I need someone with similar interests, adapt and learn my routine and most importantly, Someone who I can have a laugh with. They must have a genuine interest in the provision of high-quality care, be a good communicator and possess the motivation to develop trust and understanding within the role.
