Job overview

The Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital is located on the Royal Sussex County Hospital site in Brighton. We are a 10 Bedded level 2 Children's Critical Care Unit, where we care for both medical and surgical patients, Children requiring long term ventilation and also acute non invasive ventilation. We have the lowest Intubation rate in Europe for children with Bronchitis.

This is your opportunity to work within the Children’s Critical Care unit, as a Deputy Sister/ Charge Nurse you will be responsible for the shift by shift running of the unit whilst providing excellent nursing care. You will work closely with the Ward Manager and other senior nurses within the Children's Hospital.

We are looking for enthusiastic, dynamic, energetic children’s nurse with a skill for prioritising, delivering and organising patient care. You will have a proactive and positive approach, with evidence of excellent clinical, teaching, and managerial and inter- personal skills to lead, work along side and motivate our multi-disciplinary team. Your will be supported by our critical care educators who run and Level 2 children's critical course.

Given the focus of this post, it is essential that you are a registered Children’s nurse that has experience of either PICU or HDU Care.

Main duties of the job

To support the ward manager in providing effective clinical leadership that ensures quality patient care; good communication; safe and efficient management of the service/department within allocated resources; facilitates the development of all the staff within the team. To act as role model and expert practitioner To undertake delegated responsibility in the absence of the ward manager To ensure a safe clean clinical environment for all patients, visitors and staff To ensure patients respect, dignity and privacy and to act with kindness and courtesy to all members of the public. To understand and adhere to the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Code of Conduct and other NMC Standards To maintain accurate records of care, treatment and observations. To assist the ward manager in the control, storage and competent administration of medications according to Trust policies and NMC Guidance. To be responsible for ensuring patient safety, taking proactive steps to ensure patients come to no harm. To take personal responsibility for identifying own training needs for mandatory and statutory training and ensuring that training sessions are attended. To take personal responsibility for ensuring that personal objectives are agreed with the line manager and that annual appraisal takes place. To actively contribute to the teaching and learning of others. To actively contribute to the UHSussex Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Address the needs of individuals to bring about improvement in the health and wellbeing of patients through the delivery of evidence based care. Manage a designated group of patients on a shift by shift basis. Model good practice through the development of effective assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care. Articulate source of evidence on which care is based. Articulate the decision making process underlying the management of own time and the patient workload. Use available technology and patient record and parent/carers knowledge to identify changes in condition of the child and initiate appropriate action whilst reporting changes to the appropriate individual. Include children and carers as participating partners in planned care activities. Initiate and develop plans for health promotion with individuals involving parents/carers and multidisciplinary teams. Demonstrate involvement in a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of nutrition to the health and well-being of children. Demonstrate an awareness of the needs of all children in designated area.
