Job overview

A Resident Surgical Officer (RSO) will primarily be on the Queen Mary’s 
Hospital site to provide qualified medical cover for elective surgery patients 
(general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology and anaesthetics). 
He/she will be continually responsible for the patient’s management and care under the direction of the individual consultant and in close liaison with the nursing staff. He/she must inform consultants of any significant changes in the condition of their patients and of any emergency procedures undertaken

Main duties of the job

To make clinical decisions in the best interest of the patient.
To ensure that high standards of patient care are maintained at all 
times in accordance with agreed operational policies, as a skilled 
member of the hospital team.
 To promote and safeguard the wellbeing of all patients and staff.
The RSO must be present in the hospital when on duty, carry a working 
bleep, and respond promptly to calls for assistance or queries. 
The Service Manager for Planned Care at QMS must be informed six 
weeks in advance of any changes to the agreed rota.
 Can initiate emergency medical care as required within the Trust
guidelines for medical and surgical emergencies.
 Can carry out primary medical assessment of patients who present as 
an emergency.
 The On-Call RSO must respond to emergency calls readily and be 
familiar with the location and mode of operation of resuscitation and 
monitoring equipment. Is familiar with the drugs used in resuscitation. 
For this reason the RSO must have refresher courses in 
cardiopulmonary resuscitation annually and be ALS qualified.
 Undertake emergency procedures according to hospital policy.
 Inform consultants of any significant changes in the condition of their 
patients and of any emergency procedures undertaken.
