Job summary

This role will input into Adult Orthoplastics ( and Major Trauma ( at Manchester Royal Infirmary, MFT (you will be employed via a service level agreement that GMMH hold with MFT).

The post will equally suit candidates interested in gaining valuable early career experience in a preceptorship role (Band 7) or more experienced candidates commencing in highly specialist roles (Band 8A). The role will be embedded within the relevant medical/surgical MDTs, working alongside a wide range of professionals (including practitioner psychology colleagues) in both inpatient and outpatient settings in a busy acute hospital.

Main duties of the job

Provision of high quality, evidence-based psychological care to patients and their families and carers of respective medical/surgical speciality.

Support the ongoing improvement of psychological pathways in speciality.

Provision of consultation, training and supervision to MDT colleagues around issues pertaining to psychological models of working such as stepped care and trauma informed practice.

Working autonomously with an appropriate clinical caseload.

Research, service development and project work.

Opportunities to develop additional competencies/undertake CPD and professional training in keeping with yearly appraisal/service needs as well as objectives of the wider physical health psychological services across Greater Manchester.

Qualifications

Essential

British Psychological Society Accredited Practitioner Doctoral Degree in Clinical, Counselling or Health Psychology. Registered with The Health & Care Professions Council as a 'Practitioner Psychologist'.

Desirable

Training in trauma focused interventions CBT, EMDR

Experience

Essential

Experience of working with client groups in a physical health setting, presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the whole life course. This includes maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the possible threat of physical abuse. Experience of working as a qualified clinical/counselling/health psychologist (less experienced candidates may be appointed at Band 7 and work towards 8A competencies) Supervised experience (from a senior practitioner psychologist) in the application of cognitive-behavioural approaches to clinical settings ( trauma-focused or general medical conditions). Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment. Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

Experience of working within surgical and/or medical environments, delivering evidenced based psychological interventions. Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.

Knowledge

Essential

Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the relevant field of applied psychology. Knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies Knowledge of structure and provision of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Health Care in the NHS.

Desirable

Knowledge of legislation in relation to major trauma services, and of relevant mental health legislation. Formal training in supervision of other psychologists

Skills

Essential

Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration. Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, highly technical, and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS. Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team and to liaise effectively with other professionals.

Desirable

Skills in providing consultation to other professionals and non-professional groups.
