Job summary

The post holder is part of a specialistteam rotating through the pre-treatment and treatment areas of Radiotherapy.The post holder will work in a senior capacity, to support the team leader ofthe highly complex treatment unit, Brachytherapy unit, CT planning unit orpre-treatment liaison area.

The post holder will be required tomanage all aspects of the workload in the absence of a Band 7 Team lead and willbe directly responsible, under their duty of care, for the planning, treatmentand care of patients undergoing Radiotherapy.

Provide daily supervision and trainingto junior staff, students and visitors

Additionally the post holder worksclosely with Radiotherapy Physicists, Technicians, Oncologists, Dieticians,Speech Therapists, Nurses, Admin staff ,other Radiographers and otherprofessional groups to provide a thorough, efficient service encompassing allaspects of accurate Radiotherapy treatment delivery and patient care.

Will actively participate in clinical trials and inhouse research

Main duties of the job

Toprovide safe and accurate specialist technical service delivering therapeuticionising radiation, while maintaining a high duty of care to all patientsundergoing Radiotherapy

Todemonstrate effective patient management encompassing all patients needs,using specialist knowledge of treatment side effects, skin reactions and theirmanagement. Taking responsibility for referring patients for clinicalassessment by a consultant or deputy, prior to commencement of treatment whensymptoms become acute.

Demonstrateability to resolve complex treatment and planning issues with problem solvingskills and effective autonomous decision-making.

Computeand check specialised calculations and complex planning data relating topatients treatment delivery.

Tomaintain specialist knowledge of ARIA toenable autonomous registration, review and decision making on patientsElectronic Portal Images used to verify the patient position.

Tomaintain a specialist knowledge of ARIA requiring the individual to input, andbe a final check for patient data and plan parameters to be used forRadiotherapy treatment.

Tocommunicate effectively with Oncology Consultants & Registrars regardinghighly complex planning or treatment information to ensure safe and accuratedelivery of treatment in accordance with trust and national legislation.

Todemonstrate effective critical thinking to determine efficacy of treatmentprescription, planned and non- planned treatments.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Plymouth Oncology Centre treats ~1700patients using highly specialized e quipment with a current value~£4M.

The Treatment Management System (2servers + 25 workstations) records a nd verifies ~25,000 treatment attendances

The Department is composed of 10Consultants, 6 Specialist Registrars, 28 Radiographers, 1 Assistant Practitioner, 1 Radiotherapy Helper,1 CT Assistant and 4 Administration Support Officers providing a comprehensive service tocancer p atients

A Linear Accelerator workload is 30-35patients a day, depending on the c omplexity of the set-up.

The CT workload is 10 -11 new patientsa day.

The Liaison workload for patient reviewis 110-120 patients on average a w eek, plus other associate activitiestaking the average to 140-150 a week.

TheStereotactic Radio surgery Unit serves a population of 4 million

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Degree in Therapeutic Radiography or equivalent. DCR (T) or BSc (Hons) HCPC Registration Radiographer. Robust Profile

Desirable

Masters Level professional development.

Experience

Essential

Specialist knowledge of treatment delivery techniques including IMRT and IGRT. Experience of CT procedures within Radiotherapy and virtual simulation. Proven evidence and understanding of working under IR(ME)R 2000/2017 Experience and understanding of Record and Verify systems eg ARIA Demonstrable Knowledge of Cancer Pathology and disease patterns. An active awareness of relevant legislation, national cancer standards, professional guidelines and trust policies. (IRR IR(ME)R ISO9001:2000) Clinically competent as an autonomous practitioner. Current Specialised Knowledge and experience of the field of radiotherapy including pre-treatment and Planning. Specialised knowledge of treatment area, including potential radiation risks, acute patient side effects and their effective management.

Desirable

Experience with Varian Equipment and ARIA. Experience using Prosoma Virtual Simulation. Cannulation and contrast agent delivery (or willingness to undergo training).
