Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic neonatal consultant to join our Regional Tertiary Neonatal Unit. You will be joining a team of 11 consultants providing clinically excellent care to all babies across the South Western Operational Delivery Network. We are looking for an individual who would be able to take up this post from Autumn 2024. We are expecting to interview in August 2024.

The Regional Neonatal Unit at Southmead is a Tertiary centre with excellent clinical outcomes. We work closely with our neighbouring unit at St. Michael's Hospital as joint lead centre for the northern half of the South West Neonatal Network. We have 34 neonatal cots of which 16 are designated intensive/high dependency.

The post will attract 10 PAs and will work a shift system during on call hours.

Main duties of the job

Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register for Paediatrics, have CCT in Neonatal Medicine or equivalent. Full Registration with the GMC is essential.The post is based at Southmead Hospital . The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential. The successful candidate will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Job responsibilities

The postholder will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues, continuity of care when the postholder is absent.

The postholder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff. Where appropriate, the postholder will be named in the educational contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.

The postholder will be required to take part in a Clinical Audit Programme. The Trust has an audit department which supports and monitors such activity. There is an active Trust Clinical Audit Committee and Trust Quality and Safety Improvement Team. The unit encourages the juniors to be involved in Audit and QI and as an educational supervisor the post holder will be expected to support and encourage this.

Qualifications and Registration

MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent Maintain Full registration with the GMC Must have CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) or equivalent training and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment
