Job summary

The Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Histopathology service is seeking applications for an enthusiastic and capable individual to work in the immunohistochemistry (IHC) section as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist. Applications from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists (not yet achieved Specialist status) with suitable Histology experience in the IHC section will be considered.

Based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the post holder will be part of the core IHC team.

The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Partnership fully integrates the pathology services delivered on behalf of the Partner Trusts within the Integrated Care System (ICS) footprint; Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.

The Pathology Partnership will provide the best possible service for patients and clinicians; improving health outcomes, delivering quality and efficiency benefits and ensuring a sustainable workforce for the longer term.

Main duties of the job

Perform routine immunohistochemistry techniques, quality control check stained IHC slides leaving the laboratory

Acceptance testing of new antibodies upon delivery before incorporating into routine use, including maintaining accurate and clear validation records to satisfy laboratory accreditation.

Support the section leader with development of service and introduction of new antibodies as required.

Help organise the staffing and associated workload of the IHC section in the absence of the section leader to ensure target laboratory processing times are achieved

Train rotating staff to the section on all aspects of IHC including but not restricted to understanding of staining platforms and effective time management

Liaise with managers in the absence of the Section Leader should workloads be too great for the section to be able to achieve target laboratory processing times

Education and Qualifications

Essential

IBMS accredited BSC in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent Registered with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist Completion of IBMS post graduate registration portfolio (Band 5) Must hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant specialist subject (Band 6)

Desirable

Evidence of continued CPD including relevant courses with regards to H&S, leadership, quality or training

Experience

Essential

Experience with a range of laboratory techniques Experience with a wide range of laboratory techniques including Blood sciences, Microbiology, Histopathology, Virology - manual and semi-automated serology, automated serology analysers, molecular diagnostics (Band 6) Discipline specific NHS experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory - Microbiology/Virology/Histopathology/Blood sciences (Band 6) Experience in the implementation of new methodologies and /or equipment (Band 6) Experience with the UKAS accreditation process (Band 6)

Skills and Knowledge
