As part of the Nuclear Material Control Section (NMCS), the Nuclear Material Control Officer (NMCO) will operate NNL's accountancy and control system to support NNL project delivery in the Windscale Laboratory.

The NMCO will provide support to the Nuclear Material Custodian (NMC) and Nuclear Material Accountants (NMA) in their requirements to comply with site licence conditions and safeguards regulations. Emphasis is on the smooth delivery of day-to-day operations and the key receipts and dispatches of material, with the aim of a successful annual verification by the regulatory authority.

When required, the position holder will work a shift pattern.

Main Responsibilities

Main Responsibilities for Technical Support Officer (Nuclear Material Control Officer):

  • To input information (with respect to nuclear material, sources and non-fissile material) into ATOM to ensure that the locations, weights, isotopes and descriptions of all materials are recorded.
  • To authorise and control all receipts and dispatches of nuclear material to and from the Windscale Laboratory.
  • To authorise and control all movements of trackable material within the Windscale Laboratory.
  • To authorise moves of fissile materials and check that operations involving fissile material do not breach the rules stated in criticality certificates.
  • To produce consignment vouchers using data produced from the accountancy system to enable consignees to record relevant data into their accountancy systems.
  • To carefully and systematically file all records associated with transactions to ensure full traceability and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • To undertake monthly assurance activity and to ensure that all materials are present and correct.
  • To provide information to stakeholders on material within Windscale Laboratory.
  • To store and retrieve information and files from the NMCS Archive store.
  • To carry out annual stock takes of nuclear material.
  • As part of training and development you will be expected to pick up additional roles such as: ATOM System Manager.
Ideal Candidate

Essential Criteria for Technical Support Officer (Nuclear Material Control Officer):

  • Candidates must be capable of handling manual and computer data accurately with attention to detail.
  • GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English.
  • Good IT skills especially for databases and word processing.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Good record keeping skills.
  • Logical and methodical approach to data processing and analysis.
  • Able to work in radiation and contamination-controlled areas and attain Monitored Worker or Classified Worker classification, as required.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance (this includes but is not limited to identity, employment, financial and criminal record checks plus 5 years' worth of UK residency).

Desirable Criteria for Technical Support Officer (Nuclear Material Control Officer):

  • Understanding of Sellafield Site License requirements.
  • Competency or understanding in basic Criticality Safety & Nuclear Material Control.
