The specialities we are recruiting to are 3 Apprentice Operating Department practitioners working in the clinical environment and education at University of Bolton.

You may already have experience in this role or be approaching qualification. We support additional skill acquisition through established part University Health Sciences study.

We require staff to cover a 24 hour service over a 7 day period

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be employed in a three-year degree apprenticeship role within Airedale NHS Foundation Trust. The candidate will be expected to study a qualification in Operating Department Practice at the University of Bolton throughout the apprenticeship period. The course will involve studying fourteen modules over the three-year period.

Year 1 - Five level 4 modules 120 credits

Year 2 - Five level 5 modules 120 creditsYear 3 - Four level 6 modules 120 credits

The apprenticeship will be divided between formal education both within the Operating Theatre Department and attendance the University of Bolton.

During the apprenticeship the post holder will perform all the elements in this job description as a learner and under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a registered practitioner.

The post holder will contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs of care as part of the multidisciplinary team. The post holder will contribute to the maintenance of a safe clinical environment. The post holder is expected to work within a wide variety of clinical environments.

It is required the post holder will commit to undertake the formal education of the course and successfully complete all components of the training programme within the contract period.

The post holder will be expected to practice in accordance with all the Trust, Directorate and Departmental policies and procedures.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Participate in the planning, implementation and assessing of patient care under supervision.

2. Work as a flexible Theatre team member in full support of the Theatre team.

3. Ensure all documentation is completed accurately, legibly and confidentiality is maintained.

4. Perform operating department work in accordance with agreed policies and procedures.

5. Adhere to the guidelines and policies pertaining to the safe administration and storage of drugs within the department.

6. Participate in the provision of 24-hour cover of the department, as directed by the Theatre Sisters / Charge ODP and or Clinical Theatre Managers.

7. Participate in the Trust wide placement rotation when necessary.

8. Ensure maintenance of good working relationships, communication, and teamwork with all disciplines within the department plus wards / department within the hospital. Any duties as directed by the clinical managers or lead nurse / ODP in a specific theatre.

9. Transfer of patients using various modes of transport, throughout the hospital adhering to the current manual handling regulations and theatre competencies.

10. Contribute to the support of patients in transition from one caring setting to another.

11. Participating in team briefs and patient safety check lists.

SCRUB ROLE & CIRCULATING DUTIES Under the supervision of a registered practitioner:

1. Participate as a scrubbed member of the theatre team and carry out safety checks on swabs, instruments& needles in conjunction with a second person & reporting on the same to the surgeon.

2. Act as circulating member of the operating theatre team

3. Assist in the preparation and cleaning of the theatre suite.

4. Assist with the safe disposal of instrumentation and clinical waste , body fluids, tissue at the end of surgery.

5. Advising designated Person in Charge or Clinical Theatre Manager of any proposed changes in the order of the operating lists.

6. Assist in the safe positioning and preparation of surgical patients on the operating table as requested by the Surgeon and Anaesthetist.

7. Assist in the care, labelling and dispatch of specimens for laboratory examination.

ANAESTHETIC & POST ANAESTHETIC CARE UNIT DUTIES Under the supervision of a registered practitioner.

1. Carry out the preliminary checking of all anaesthetic and PACU equipment prior to the commencement of the theatre list.

2. Receive and identify patients along with all relevant documentation from the escorting nurse, ensuring all information pertaining to the patients identification is correct.

3. Provide skilled, specialized assistance to the anaesthetist in the transfer of critically ill patients to other hospital when necessary.

4. Report immediately to the medical staff any adverse changes in the patients condition or any other aspect of concern.

5. Participate in the post operative recovery of patients at all levels of dependency.

6. Ensure patients receive appropriate assessment pain management whilst in recovery.

7. Ensure the safe and effective handover of the patients perioperative journey are handed over to the ward staff.

EDUCATION

1. It is required that postholders will commit to undertake the formal education of the course and successfully complete all components of the training programme within the contract period.

2. The post holder is expected to be proactive in seeking opportunities to develop their own knowledge and skills, achieving clinical competencies within agreed timeframes, and to seek support / guidance in a timely manner if any difficulties are encountered.
