Qualifications

Essential criteria

Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent Dysphagia Competency HCPC registration Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists

Desirable criteria

Videofluoroscopy competencies RCSLT level 3 Competence in the assessment and management of patients with tracheostomy

Experience

Essential criteria

Working with a range of conditions including respiratory, neurological conditions, acquired disorders, long-term conditions and care of the elderly in an acute setting Independent assessment, management, therapeutic intervention and discharge of patients with communication disorders and dysphagia

Desirable criteria

Supervision of students and junior staff Working in a Critical Care environment

Technical Skills

Essential criteria

Skills to assess, manage & treat conditions and patients with complex multi pathologies at specialist level Skills in assessment and support of alternative and augmentative communication aids Skills to independently prioritise clinical and nonclinical workload

Desirable criteria

Skills to teach & supervise staff & assistants

Knowledge

Essential criteria

Sound understanding of the pathology of neurological conditions, respiratory conditions, older person’s medicine, gastroenterology and critical care conditions Knowledge of the clinical pathway for patients from acute care to long term management Understanding of Clinical Governance and its relevance to clinical situations Understanding of National Service Frameworks, NICE guidance and National strategy documents. Ability to critique evidence base and apply to clinical practice

Desirable criteria

Knowledge of pathways for patients with a tracheostomy

To have a full driving license and be able to drive within the local geographic area (will be deemed an essential criteria if interested in a rotational post that includes ESD)
