Job overview

The post holder will be responsible for the co-ordination and organisation of the Acute oncology service (AOS) under the direction of the Acute Oncology Team (AOT). The AOS seeks to bring together expertise from emergency medicine, acute medicine & oncology to provide high quality care to patients who present acutely unwell because of their cancer, cancer treatment, as well as patient’s whose emergency presentation may result in a diagnosis of a cancer.

This includes malignancy of unknown origin (MUO) and cancer of unknown primary (CUP). The post holder will be committed to providing high quality compassionate care to all patients in a sensitive and empathic manner both directly and indirectly, therefore, excellent communication skills, a good understanding of cancer pathways and the knowledge and skills to navigate patients through the health and social care systems are essential.

The post holder will play a key role in supporting and signposting patients to ensure a positive patient journey from admission to discharge, this will include liaising with other teams. As a team player you will work collaboratively with the AOT and wider oncology specialities to improve the information and support available for this specific cohort of patients, escalating any concerns as appropriate to one of the clinical team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:-

Help the AOT to demonstrate effective time management and organisational skills to ensure patients are seen without delay. In addition, the post holder will be expected to provide full administrative and clerical support for the AOT and coordinate AOT meetings.

Communicate effectively with a range of individuals on various levels, including patients, relatives, carers, other health/social care professionals both internally and externally.

On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assist the AOT to plan and co-ordinate specialist programs of education and training internally and externally including preparing all the necessary documentation and maintaining a comprehensive training register.

Assist the AOT with the administration of Patient Impact Statements and care planning for CUP patients. This will include the completion of any follow up work generated e.g. making onward referrals to primary, community and hospital specialist teams.

Track any follow up tests or scans for patients under the team and ensure tests results are available and acted upon or escalated where necessary.

Proactively manage telephone calls/emails and other queries, some of a sensitive nature which require a high level of patient confidentiality. Use own initiative to seek professional advice as needed and autonomously act on that information. This will include the ability to negotiate with a wide range of departments.

Aid the AOT to triage alerts received via HIS, internal/external e-mail and phone for acute cancer admissions throughout WWL and liaise with wards and departments to actively seek patients.

Essential criteria

NVQ Level 3 in health related subject / equivalent knowledge and experience 5 GCSEs grade C or above or equivalent including Maths and English language

Desirable criteria

Willing to complete learning/ training courses relevant to the development of the role.

Experience

Essential criteria

Experience working in a health care setting Recent experience in an administrative/clerical environment. Experience of dealing with patient enquiries including sensitive content. Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team Skills in data interpretation Experience of providing administrative support to teams

Desirable criteria

Proven experience of working to deadlines Tracking patient pathways Experience working with patients affected by cancer
