Positive Behaviour Support

Thatcham, United Kingdom Prior's Court Foundation Full time

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) aims to enhance young people’s quality of life and ensure they lead full, enriched, and productive lives with opportunities and choice. We emphasise positive relationships between staff and young people as they are an essential platform for young people to feel safe and secure, to be happy and make progress. We use a range of strategies to support young people to learn to self-regulate and develop skills.

All behaviour has a purpose. Sometimes to tell us what is wrong or get their needs met, young people may behave in a way that challenges us. This can have a negative impact on the young person, others, their environment, their relationships, and their quality of life. If young people’s needs are met and they lead satisfying lives, the occurrences of behaviours that challenge will reduce.

PBS uses a variety of sources to understand what young people are trying to tell us. Assessing the functions of behaviours that challenge allows us to develop individualised, person-centred strategies and interventions that proactively meet the young person’s needs, making these behaviours redundant. Each young person has a PBS Plan detailing proactive, active, and reactive support. These are written and regularly reviewed by our team of PBS Learning Specialists. Strategies are carefully considered by all those supporting a young person, including staff and parents.

is the positive behaviour training used at Prior’s Court, which provides a holistic approach to understanding and de-escalating behaviour.
