Critical Care in East Kent is at an exciting period of redevelopment, having attracted national in-vestment to significantly expand capacity and grow our Kent Critical Care operates across three units: Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital, Margate (9 beds), and the Kent and Canterbury Hospital (8 beds) and the William Harvey Hospital (expanding to 24 beds).This post is based at QEQM Hospital and it is designed for doctors who have completed foundation training who are looking to pursue a career in Anaesthetics or Intensive Care will gain experience in the management of critically ill patients in a supportive environment whilst improving their CV in the area of interest of Research. Successful applicants will work under the close supervision of consultant intensivists and senior trainees. The department is very active in the following areas; teaching, research and point of care ultrasound and echocardiography.

Main duties of the job

As a Junior Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine, your primary responsibilities during on-call times include reviewing critically ill patients in the ICU, emergency department, and hospital wards. You will be involved in admitting patients to the ICU under the supervision of a Consultant and will be responsible for ordering and interpreting necessary investigations. Ensuring safe and effective handover between shifts is crucial, along with participating in audits, patient safety initiatives, and morbidity and mortality meetings. You will also engage in multidisciplinary meetings and be an active participant in the teaching programme that follows the FICM syllabus.

A significant part of the role involves the development of critical care ultrasound skills. This training will take place on standard weekdays (Monday to Friday), with dedicated time allocated within the rota for skill development, supervised by Dr. Ana Alegria, the Site Ultrasound Lead. During the 12-month post, there is an opportunity to achieve accreditation in FUSIC Heart (formerly known as FICE) or BSE Level 1 and to pursue service improvement projects. Depending on your progress and interest, there is also the potential to continue echocardiography training towards BSE Level 2 or to pursue FUSIC Lung, Abdomen, and Vascular modules. The ICU department is equipped with one advanced echocardiography machine and two handheld ultrasound machines, providing ample resources for training and skill enhancement.
