Job overview

We are looking for Consultant Physicians with a specialist interest, passion, and drive to further develop and deliver our Acute Medical services. We recognise the importance of a rewarding and sustainable job role especially given the high acuity and pressures associated with delivery of Acute Care. This role comes with the opportunity for the successful applicants (should they wish) to spend two sessions to further develop interests in other areas which may include another specialty service or alternatively medical education, clinical governance and quality improvement, clinical leadership or research. The specialty services available include Critical Care, Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Frailty, Palliative Care, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Care of the Elderly and Emergency Medicine.

The proposed AAC date is 2nd July 4.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to:

·Be actively involved in the leadership, management and decision making within theDepartment

·Be readily available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely

·Ensure that management plans are clearly displayed in the notes of patients with complex needs

·Liaise closely with the Divisional and Service Managers, and the Associate Medical Director, to ensure that waiting list targets are achieved.

·Share with Consultant colleagues the responsibility for providing clinical services for the local population

·Foster relationships between staff within the each organisation, and also with the local Clinical Commissioning Groups

·Work flexibly to achieve high quality care

·Ensure the policies for communication with General Practitioners, Trust staff and patients are followed

·Ensure that optimal use is made of all resources allocated to the post

·Cover Consultant colleagues during periods of leave.

Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) provides good quality, safe and effective healthcare to the people of Cheshire and beyond. The Trust, which manages Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford, was established as an NHS Trust in April 1 and became a Foundation Trust in April 8.

We employ almost 5, members of staff, provide around hospital beds, with a range of services including accident and emergency, maternity, outpatients, therapies, and children's health.

The Trust is also part of Central Cheshire Integrated Care Partnership (CCICP), a unique local health partnership that provides a range of community services for people across South Cheshire and Vale Royal.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, the Trust was recognised nationally for its ‘Be Safe Be EquiPPEd’ campaign, which aimed to make the Trust as safe as possible for staff and patients, through supporting the correct use of PPE.

The results in the 0 national NHS Staff Survey showed improvements in all elements of the safety culture theme, with % of respondents feeling their role made a difference to our patients. We were also recognised nationally for our workforce health and wellbeing initiatives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidates will be based at Leighton Hospital, Crewe in theAcute Medical Unit, Division of Medicine and Emergency Care.

The post is offered on a fixed term, full time, or job share basis; the job plan being intended for a full-time appointment with an opportunity to modify this if the post is offered on any other basis.

The successful applicants must have full registration with the GMC and continue to hold a License to Practice. The applicants must also be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine with a specialist interest.

The successful candidates will be highly motivated with a passion to improve the quality of patient care. They will have strong communication skills and be an excellent ‘Team Player’. They will value training and education.

Essential criteria

Full Registration with the General Medical Council and a Licence to Practise Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR or European Community Rights MBBS or equivalent

Desirable criteria

Additional higher degrees relevant to this post Other postgraduate qualification e.g. MD, PhD Qualified educational supervisor

Experience

Essential criteria

Extensive experience in Acute / General Internal Medicine

Desirable criteria

Other specialties will be considered but especially desirable would be Respiratory Medicine, Care of the Elderly/Frailty, Diabetes or Rheumatology

Ability

Recognised ability to work within, and provide leadership to, the multidisciplinary team Effective communicator Excellent interpersonal skills Flexibility of approach Commitment to clinical risk management and implementation of clinical governance Effective team leader

Audit and Research

Essential criteria

Relevant experience in clinical audit Relevant experience in research and evidence of publications Ability to develop evidence based practice

Teaching and Education

Essential criteria

Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Clinical Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC Experience and interest in teaching both junior medical and non-medical staff Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development and lifelong learning Commitment to teaching Membership of Society of Acute Medicine

Desirable criteria

Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Educational Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC Recognised teaching skills course Special interest in role development and staff training Membership of relevant medical associations/learned societies

Other

Essential criteria

Ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff at all levels of the organisation Full driving licence Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice)
