Particle Science Lead

Ware, United Kingdom 1054 GlaxoSmithKline Services Unlimited Full time

The Materials Science function is a team of experts within GSK’s Global Supply Chain (GSC) MSAT (Manufacturing Science & Technology) division, which provides critical support, at pace, to GSK and third-party manufacturing sites for established products and new product introduction (NPI). Key projects are aligned to material changes, Technical Transfers, NPI milestones and investigations (including rapid resolution of business-critical supply issues). The Materials Science team is part of a wider Global MSAT Analytical team which covers small and large molecule medicines, and vaccines.

Job Purpose:

As the Particle Science Lead (reporting to the Head of Materials Science) you will manage business-critical Materials Science projects across dosage forms and throughout the product lifecycle (from late phase NPI assets prior to launch, through to established commercial assets) and provide technical leadership and support to the business. You will be mostly focussed on work associated with small molecule medicines (but flexibility is required to cover large molecule and vaccine products as per business needs).

You will apply technical expertise in primary manufacturing unit operations (specifically API crystallisation, isolation, drying and particle size reduction) to control and understand key aligned physical properties of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), including solid state derived from the primary process. You will also provide critical support to material change assessments and implementation, Technical Transfers, investigations and NPI milestones. Your expertise will extend to providing training and guidance to the wider MSAT team as well as the provision of subject matter expertise to oversee risk-based data-driven decision making for GSK products.

Key Responsibilities (include..,):

Apply deep technical knowledge on API particle formation and isolation processes (e.g. crystallisation, isolation, drying and onward particle size reduction) to support development and manufacturing of products (ensuring manufacturability and product quality).

Apply Materials Science mechanistic thinking and leverage Particle Science subject matter expertise (including in solid state and physical properties) to troubleshoot and resolve manufacturability and product quality issues that arise.

Provide expert support to Technical / Material Risk Assessments for changes at internal and external primary sites (including Technical Transfer processes) and design and execute associated characterisation strategies to support material comparability assessment.

Design characterisation strategies with clear rationale and benefits to support business needs and work collaboratively to execute characterisation (with global MSAT Analytical and Materials Science hubs, site-based labs, external contract labs, and R&D).

Provide technical expertise (oversight) to method development, optimization and transfers for physical properties testing and regulatory submissions / RTQs.

Chair assigned internal governance forums (eg; change control teams and technical review panels).

Location: Ideally, we are looking for the successful applicant to be based at the Ware manufacturing site (Hertfordshire, UK) but we can also base the successful applicant at the Stevenage (Hertfordshire, UK) or Jurong (Singapore) sites.

About You:

This role would suit a motivated person who has a strong scientific background working as a Particle Scientist / Crystallisation expert / Materials Scientist or in a related scientific discipline. You will be degree-qualified with excellent scientific and technical knowledge.

You will have excellent communication and collaboration skills to work cross-functionally and to influence key stakeholders. Excellent problem-solving skills are required with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues. You will be self-motivated, highly organized, with resilience and a keenness to learn and add value.

Closing date for applications: Friday 31st of May 2024 (COB).

Basic Qualifications:

Relevant Scientific Degree (aligned to Particle Science/Materials Science e.g. Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences)

Relevant experience (eg; working in a highly-regulated industry with relevant particle science-related knowledge/experience)

Benefits:

GSK offers a range of benefits to its employees, which include, but are not limited to:

Competitive base Salary

Annual bonus based on company performance

Opportunities to partake in on the job training courses

Opportunities to attend and partake in industry conferences

Opportunities for support for professional development/chartership
