Job summary
The Lead Nurse will be a key member of the senior nursing team within Variety Children's Hospital Senior Management Team, responsible for assisting the Head of Nursing with the development and delivery of clinical and professional standards and the development of nursing leadership within the neonatal services.
The post holder will work closely with the Head of Nursing to deliver the strategy for Neonatal nursing in line with nationally agreed guidelines and standards. The Lead Nurse will have a lead role in delivering key aspects of the governance and risk agenda and will have line management responsibility for the Neonatal Matrons and Neonatal Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
The lead nurse will work closely with the London Operational Delivery Network (ODN) as well as the Local Maternity Neonatal Systems (LMNS) to develop longer term strategies for Variety Children's Hospital neonatology in line with the neonatal critical care transformation plans and Saving babies Lives Care Bundles.
This is a cross site post, ensuring the provision of a high-quality neonatal nursing service on both Kings College Hospital and Princess Royal University Hospital sites.
Main duties of the job
To lead the Neonatology Nursing team across the trust
To be professionally accountable for the Neonatal service, the KCH polices and NMC Codes of Conduct
To monitor, evaluate and critically appraise neonatal nursing practice and to modify approaches to clinical care as necessary
To work with key personnel and wider MDT, involved in care of babies
To work with external partners to deliver the neonatal long term strategies
To work with the King's Academy to support the neonatal course

CLINICAL AND PROFESSIONAL
To personally adhere to and uphold the NMC Professional Code of Conduct at all times. To act up for the Head of Nursing as required. To provide professional leadership and support to the neonatal matrons and advanced nurse practitioners within the neonatal services, ensuring they have regular updates and at least annual appraisals in collaboration with other senior staff as required. To be visible, accessible and approachable to nursing staff, patients and the public so that open and honest communication channels are created, and effective assessments of care delivery can be undertaken. To provide professional nursing leadership to inspire, motivate and empower neonatal nurses, providing expert advice on all matters related to paediatrics. To work in conjunction with the Head of Nursing to ensure the continued development of nursing practice to take account of research and development within paediatrics. To ensure clinical and administrative policies and procedures are adhered to. To maintain clinical competence and credibility, acting as a role model for best practice nursing ensuring that nursing care is provided to a high standard, is responsive to changing service and patient needs and in line with the child health business plan. To ensure the Division interfaces effectively with all other departments in the Trust in a professional and productive manner at all times, providing a responsive service to the Trust. To ensure that all babies/children within the neonatal departments receive appropriate evidence-based nursing care. Work collaboratively with all departments within the organisation where babies/children are seen to ensure this occurs in areas outside of the paediatric departments. To keep up to date with national and trust policies and disseminate the information as appropriate, ensuring that implications and recommendations are taken forward. To take personal responsibility for own professional growth and to develop agreed action plan with the Divisional Head of Nursing. To collaborate with Womens colleagues in the delivery of ATAIN, HSIB Baby Friendly initiatives Maternity Incentive Scheme, Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle Initiatives, Perinatal and Preterm Optimisation Programme Work within South London ODN on strategies for the network, Southeast London and LMNS meetings Attend ODN clinical oversight group meetings as well as ODN London governance meetings Lead on National neonatal audit programme for the cross-site nursing team, Core member of the Southeast London LMNS Surveillance meeting Lead on EPIC oversight for service management for nursing team Attend PSIRF Maternity and Neonatal Improvements and Preterm Optimisation initiatives Work with head of nursing and directory of midwifery on delivering transitional care on both sites
2. EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND SERVICE DELIVERY
To contribute to the development and delivery of nursing and inter-professional education programmes, ensuring staff are appropriately developed and are efficient, effective, engaged and highly motivated. To ensure all staff benefit from appropriate continuing educational opportunities and ensure equity of access to these. To have oversight and deliver of the Neonatal modules at the Kings Academy To support a culture of continuous quality improvement, formally evaluating standards of care and leading in the implementation of changes and nursing developments in the light of such findings. To support the development of nursing policies and protocols within the clinical area, ensuring that practice is evidence based. To support user involvement work within the Division by encouraging and promoting the involvement of users in planning, monitoring and developing services. To provide support and advice to staff to promote best practice. To ensure the recognition and value of the Nursing contribution and encourage a culture of professional academic publication within the Nursing team. To support and lead any other national and local clinical and non-clinical audit programmes as appropriate. Work with director of midwifery and Maternity Governance leads on shared maternity transformation and audit goals.
3. SERVICE DEVELOPMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Develop a lead role in data management and London ODN dashboard performance indicators To assist in the production of information required for the performance scorecard. To be responsible for ensuring key nursing targets are met and to ensure remedial actions are completed where improvement are required. To work co-operatively with the senior clinical staff to enable the achievement of change and the improvement in performance. To support paediatric areas to optimise the quality and efficiency of admission and discharge processes that enabling child health to manage within the available bed pool. To contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of the business plan and strategic direction of Childrens services. To be responsible for an allocated budget and support others in managing their devolved budgets maximising resources, including staff, equipment and time. To participate in clinical workforce planning ensuring this is fit for purpose. To contribute to the recruitment, selection and induction of staff. To provide appropriate counselling and advice to staff in line with the Trusts disciplinary and sickness procedures and to participate in the disciplinary procedure at an appropriate level. To ensure staff have individual performance review and a personal development plan to ensure standards are achieved. To create an atmosphere of mutual respect and co-operation between all professionals and actively promote opportunities for multidisciplinary team working. To ensure staff are appropriately briefed on key objectives and performance indicators for the Trust and child health and given the opportunity to influence and participate in this as appropriate. 4. RISK AND GOVERNANCE
To support child health to develop an integrated strategy for clinical governance, with a specific focus on all aspects of clinical and non-clinical risk management. To actively participate in projects and actions identified on the Child Health Risk Register. Attend and participate in London ODN governance meetings and strategy To actively participate in the maternity risk and governance meetings Attend and provide reports to the Maternity and Neonatal Quality and Safety Meetings To contribute to the investigation and resolution of complaints and adverse incidents, ensuring that appropriate action is taken to prevent re-occurrence of problem, sharing this information across the department, alongside CNO, participate in Maternity Neonatal Safety Champion assessments To take a lead role in delivering on the infection control action plan and reducing hospital acquired infections. To support the Delivery Manager, ensuring that systems are in place to comply with health and safety protocols, directives and legislation.
People Management and Performance Lead, coach and manage the performance of the team in line with good people management practices. Ensuring excellence is recognised and underperformance is addressed. Participate in regular performance appraisal meetings and ensure each member of the team has a clear set of objectives and development plans. Ensure the team is compliance with all statutory, mandatory training together with any professional training requirements, ensuring they are up to date and fully compliant. Manage team absences including sickness in line with Trust policy ensuring the appropriate return to work meetings occur, e-roster is updated, and productivity is at keep to the highest possible level. Identify and fill any vacancies that arise within the team in line with the Trusts recruitment policy and process. Identify talent and support the internal talent management process in order attract and retain and succession plan for your people. Review skills mix at regular intervals in order to identify any potential opportunities to maximise resource utilisation / allocation, ensuring job descriptions are kept up to date.
