The Blood Sciences department has an exciting vacancy for a Biomedical Scientist, Band 5 or 6, dependent upon previous experience. We would like to recruit a BMS specifically with Haematology and Blood Transfusion experience into this post.

The role includes working as part of a multidisciplinary trained BMS team primarily within Haematology and Blood Transfusion, and also Clinical Biochemistry. The role includes the expectation that the post holder will take part in the 24/7 cover provided by the laboratory, including rotation on days, nights and weekends.

Ideally you will already be working within a UKAS accredited NHS Blood Sciences laboratory as a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist. Training and support will be given to complete the IBMS Specialist Portfolio if required. To be eligible for the role at Band 6 level, you must have completed the IBMS Specialist Diploma in a Blood Sciences subject, or have a minimum of 2 years experience working on a Blood Sciences out of hours shift rota. 

Should you have previous Haematology and Blood Transfusion experience, you must be willing to learn the Clinical Biochemistry aspect of the role. 

Main duties of the job

To ensure the work within Blood Sciences is processed to the required standard, within agreed turnaround times and appropriate action is taken when necessary following departmental procedures.To perform equipment maintenance and quality control of test procedures to agreed schedules within assigned area.To ensure quality compliance to maintain laboratory accreditation to ISO :, and compliance with MHRA standards.To monitor and maintain equipment, to undertake basic trouble shooting and inform section leader (Senior BMS) of any non-conformities.To ensure the safe storage and supply of blood products and components to patients.To contribute to providing reports in a timely manner to contribute to patient care and treatment.Under strict protocols, validate and authorise routine and specialist results, or refer to Blood Sciences clinical staff for release to users where appropriate.To participate in the rotation through, and maintain competency in, all relevant departments of the Blood Sciences laboratory.To assist with laboratory stores and maintenance of consumable stocks.To suggest ways to improve working practices.
