Job summary

The team at Warwick Hospital Intensive Care Unit are looking for a motivated and ambitious Band 6 to join our ICU family.

The successful candidate will have a post registration qualification in Adult Critical Care Nursing (or working towards one) and will have been practising in the critical care environment for a minimum of 2 years. You will be joining a multidisciplinary team of skilled and highly motivated staff who provide high quality care within our 6 bedded ICU.

The post is an excellent opportunity to advance your clinical leadership knowledge and skills further in the critical care speciality.

At Warwick ICU we promote a flexible workforce and the successful candidate will be expected to rotate on to the Critical Care Outreach Team. Your personal and professional development will be supported by a proactive and dynamic senior leadership team and you will have opportunity to attend in-house training days as well as learning Advanced Life Support.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is required to work as part of a team committed to delivering and improving a high standard of evidence-based nursing care within the critical care area:

To assist in the overall daily management of the ICU.

To ensure that all Trust standards are maintained and monitored to improve the quality of care to all whom come into contact with services provided by South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust.

To liaise with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, so as to co-ordinate and deliver a high standard of patient care for a span of duty.

To utilise practical and academic opportunities to become a skilled Critical Care nurse.

Clinical Responsibilities

To lead the daily clinical management of the ICU as required, ensuring that the broader operational objectives are achieved.

To participate in - and be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the nursing care for critically ill patients.

To monitor standards of care delivery.

To support the implementation and evaluation of the quality initiatives, and to lead and participate in the change process.

To report on patient care, co-ordinate and communicate any changes to appropriate multi-disciplinary team members.

To ensure nursing procedures are carried out in accordance with local policies/procedures/guidelines.

To practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice, and maintain own NMC registration.

Maintain accurate records of patient care and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.

Professional Responsibilities

Maintain effective two-way channels of communication with patients, relatives and all other staff involved in Critical Care services, ensuring a team approach whilst fostering good working relations with all wards and departments.

To participate in team, professional and personal development activities and promote commitment to continuous development and improvement.

Attend hospital and unit meetings and disseminate information.

Maintain a professional attitude at all times, acting as a positive role model for Critical Care services and the nursing profession, whilst maintaining personal motivation.

Encompass flexible working initiatives within the Critical Care services.

To complete the orientation programme and ensure statutory training requirements are updated regularly, and equipment training needs are identified and met.

Accept deployment to other wards and departments if the clinical situation/staffing levels demand.

Maintain a professional attitude at all times, acting as a positive role model for ICU and the nursing profession.

Education

To participate in meeting the educational needs of all staff.

To assist with the development and implementation educational programmes on the unit.

To keep up-to-date with current advances in nursing and clinical practice, act as a resource for students and junior members of staff, guiding their practice assessing their competence and supporting their learning.

Promote a positive and effective learning environment for all staff.

To act as a mentor to post-registration nurses, teaching and assessing them in accordance with their objectives and ensuring their placement in Critical Care is conducive to learning.

To participate in appropriate training and development activities.

Ensure relevant teaching qualifications, statutory and equipment training is updated on a continual basis of at least yearly.

Financial Management

To have an understanding of cost implications within Critical Care and ensure equipment and consumables are used efficiently to minimum waste.

Information Management

To provide accurate information for data collection systems.

To participate in research and equipment trials carried out within the clinical area.
