Job summary

Band 3 Infant Feeding Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to provide direct delivery of clinical care to all women and babies accessing maternity services, and will be based within specialist Infant Feeding team. Band 3 MSWs may serve as a point of contact/support for women and their families during the antenatal and postnatal period within the hospital setting. They will provide clinical, physical, psychological and emotional care and support within the context of infant feeding; they provide appropriate information and, where necessary, discuss with a registered professional and also signpost to wider support organisations.

Main duties of the job

To support Breast feeding in line with Baby Friendly principles and local policy and guidelines, including:

Assist and promote women to bond with their baby , Assist women to undertake skin to skin, Assist women to expressing milk Assist women to use breast pump Assist women to cup feed healthy term neonate Support families experiencing feeding issues in ward or clinic settings Support specialist midwives within the infant feeding. Participate in staff and patient audit.

Maternity Support Worker

Band 3

Base. LRI.

You may be required to work in other designated locations of the Trust as well as your primary base. In particular, flexibility is required across the three main hospital sites (Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital). If your initial location is one of these sites excess travel reimbursement would not apply for a permanent or temporary change of base.

Accountable to: Matron for Specialist Midwifery Services.

Job Summary.

Provide clinical and non-clinical support to the Multi-professional team under the direction of an appropriate Registered Health Care Professional. Deliver direct and indirect care under the direction of an appropriate Registered Health Care Professional. Deliver effective healthcare to patients/ service users.

Key Working Relationships:

Midwives

Infant Feeding team/Ward/Unit Manager

Obstetrician, the wider multi-disciplinary team; Facilities Directorate; Womens and Childrens Directorate; Infection control; Patient Information and Liaison Service the Trust.

1 DELIVERY OF EFFECTIVE HEALTH CARE WITHIN THE ORGANISATION

Undertake specified direct and indirect care, clinical and therapeutic intervention as delegated by the Registered Midwife / Nurse / Health Care Professional.

Carry out clinical care and support consistent with the patients/users plans of care.

Implement maternity care programmes, including providing advice i accordance within agreed Trust and Directorate policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.

Deliver unsupervised specified care and intervention as prescribed by an appropriate Registered Health Care Professional in accordance to agreed Trust and Directorate policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines

Assist the Registered Professional by developing care plans; assessing and documenting care; providing verbal and written reports in an effective and safe manner.

Make observations of care with regard to supporting the patients/users general health and wellbeing.

Maintain effective communication with the Registered Midwife/Health Care Professional regarding issues relating to assigned duties, promptly reporting areas of concern.

Carry out duties consistent with individual patients/users wishes, maintaining privacy, dignity and recognising cultural diversity and needs.

Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the care delivered by the Health care team and that benefits the patient/user experience.

2 MANAGEMENT AND USE OF INFORMATION, RESOURCES, CLERICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIVITIES

Use health-related information only for the purposes of what it is intended for and in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times and information relating to patients/users and personnel is used only in connection with authorised duties.

Carry out designated clerical duties as delegated by the Midwife Ward Manager, Registered Midwife / Health care Professional.

Take responsibility for the management of stock levels, ordering of and efficient use of stock, sundries and resources within own work activities.

MAINTAINING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY

Take responsibility for maintaining own and others Health and Safety and Security.

Ensure own actions assist with maintaining best practice and Standards for Better Health.

Promote and practice the highest standards of the prevention and control of Infection all times.

Assist with the maintenance of a clean and safe environment adhering to prevention and control of infection policies, procedures and best practice.

Carry out duties in accordance with the Health and Safety at work Act 1971.

Move and handle patients and goods in ways that promote the health of the patient and care team and are consistent with legislation

Assist and maintain safe and hazard free area of work.

Act in a professional manner and adhere to the UHL uniform policy.

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE, REDUCTION OF RISK, AUDIT AND RESEARCH

Undertake only those duties and delegated tasks and treatments within own limitations, level of competence, skill and training.

Deliver direct and indirect care within CMG, Trust, local and nationally agreed protocols and policies.

Participates in clinical trials as required.

Assist with the collection of simple data for audit/research and other purposes as delegated by the health care team.

Contribute to the management of risk through risk assessment processes to ensure that risks are reduced at all times to the lowest minimal levels.

Adheres to Trust policies, procedures and guidelines and promotes the compliance of others.

ESTABLISHING EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS AND COMMUNICATION.

Maintain healthy working relationships with the Multi Professional Team, patient and users.

Contribute to the effectiveness of inter-agency working as appropriate.

Communicate condition-related information to women and their families.

Communicate sensitive information in a sensitive manner.

Support patients and users in maintaining their identity and relationships.

Ensure that lines of reporting to the Registered Midwife/Health Care Professional are timely, robust and efficient.

6. RESPONSIBILITIES FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION AND PERSONAL

Undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and competency Programmes appropriate to role.

Take responsibility for undertaking own mandatory training and updates as required.

Have undertaken the specified NVQ training at level 3 (or equivalent) or be nearing completion and any other competency programmes relevant to directorate needs and own role.

Complete specialist training required that allows Health Care to be delivered to the user through new ways of working.

Take responsibility in collaboration with line manager within the appraisal / Personal Development Planning (PDP) process for identifying own learning and development needs within the knowledge and skills framework.

Demonstrate skills and activities to others in similar roles and deliver the training of other Maternity Care Assistants and support workers. Supervise other learners as required.

Undertake NVQ work based assessor awards and act as an assessor of appropriate learners/ cadets and others as appropriate to own role.

Participate in Clinical Supervision and act as a supervisor /mentor for those in similar role.

DIRECTORATE /ROLE SPECIFIC

Knowledge and experience of Antenatal / Maternity care procedures, guidelines and practices.

Ability to organise, prioritise and adjust own workload in relation to client care working alongside the multi-disciplinary team.

Knowledge of Specialist Clinic Guidelines and procedures and the ability to give appropriate advice to women and their families about their planned care.

Knowledge of Antenatal and Newborn screening guidelines.

Ability to cope with difficult family situations including child protection issues, Rainbow babies and babies with specific birth anomalies to support women and colleagues during these times.

Ability to use a computer to look up appointments and telephone consultations and arrange appointments. Training will be given if required.

File medical records.

To be able to initiate and plan care related to infant feeding as part of the multi-disciplinary team in postnatal wards, Delivery suites and neonatal unit.

You will be required to maintain compliance with all statutory and mandatory training requirements.
