Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive 10 PA Consultant Medical Microbiologist due to retirement of a colleague to start January 2025 to join a team of dynamic Consultants at UCLH.

This post is extremely varied and will give the post-holder an opportunity to gain experience in a wide variety of infection liaison activities.

The main activities are:o A leading role in overseeing the clinical infection service to urology and thoracic surgery at the UCLH Westmoreland Street Hospital. This includes aspects of diagnosis and management of infection, antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and Leading microbiology role in the recurrent urinary tract infection MDTo Supporting the microbiology liaison to the Haematology service through:o Daily multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting with Grafton Way intensive care unit (mainly haematology patients)o Contribution to weekly national MDT for HLH (Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis)o Contributing to the Consultant general clinical microbiology service through leading on the daily bacteraemia / complex case meetingo Contribute to the Trust's infection control and antimicrobial stewardship activities through:o Sharing in leading on Clostridiodes difficile ward roundso Contributing to antimicrobial stewardship data mapping within the infection division to develop future interventions

Main duties of the job

The job plan is expected to comprise 10 PAs per week on average including the on-call commitment ( PAs Direct Clinical Care and up to PAs Supporting Professional Activities).

The appointee will be lead on laboratory liaison, microbiological and infection control advice and antimicrobial stewardship for Urology and Thoracic Surgery. The post also supports the monthly recurrent urinary tract infection MDT.

Microbiology support to Haematology in this post involves a daily MDT for the Grafton Way intensive care unit (mainly haematology patients) and attendance at the national 2 weekly MDT for HLH (Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis). There is likely to be an opportunity to widen the activity in this post for Haematology later in the year.

Contribution to the Trust's infection control and antimicrobial stewardship activities will be through sharing in leading on Clostridiodes difficile ward rounds and contributing to antimicrobial stewardship data mapping within the infection division to develop future interventions.

To help support this work, the post holder will contribute to key laboratory governance activities including attendance at laboratory working groups, for example the urine bench.

The appointee will be required to participate in the consultant on-call rota (Category B) for weekdays and weekends. There is a rota for specialty registrars who are first on call. The frequency of the Consultant rota for this post is 1 in 9 and is considered low frequency.

Clinical Microbiology is within the Infection Division which is one of six Divisions within the Medicine Board led by Charles House. The Infection Division comprises the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, infectious diseases inpatient and outpatient activity including the OPAT clinic, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Virology, Parasitology, Infection Prevention & Control, Find & Treat and NathNac. The Division works closely with the Pathology Division.

Within the Divisions of Infection each discipline has a Clinical Lead. The post holder will be accountable to Mike Brown, Divisional Clinical Director of Infection, via the Clinical Lead for Microbiology, Trupti Patel.

Within Microbiology there are 11 Consultants, many of whom are less than full time and also have other activities such as research. We are a very supportive team and aim to provide the best care for patients at UCLH through our activities.

UCLH Microbiology is a training centre with 4-5 microbiology trainees at any one time and a comprehensive training programme. The appointee would be expected to participate in the supervision, training and mentoring of junior medical staff.

As a department, we participate in a range of teaching activities including undergraduates, specialty trainees, trainees from other specialties, laboratory staff, infection control staff and trainee clinical scientist staff.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview. Applicants that are UK trained, must be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Medical Microbiology, or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
