Tutor in Architecture
7hrs a week, 37 weeks per year (Friday) - Permanent
The Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 5th in the prestigious QS world university rankings and enjoys the unique context of being a collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester. It is one of the largest Schools of Architecture in the country with over 1250 students (typically representing some 85 countries) and over 150 staff from diverse backgrounds and is proud to retain both its quality and sense of community despite its size.
The School is characterised by excellence, ambition, boldness, inquisitiveness, innovation, and social justice and responsibility. These facets generate a unique blend and balance between research led teaching, impressive and relevant research outputs (84% of research activity is world leading or internationally excellent), and extensive professional industry links, all of which encourage our students to cultivate their own unique approach to architecture and their careers thereafter.
The specific role is as a Lecturer in the [CPU]ai Atelier which is at the forefront of research-led architectural design, with all teaching at the MArch level intricately connected to groundbreaking research conducted in our [CPU]lab. In our studio, we delve into alternative design processes by developing and applying bespoke computational tools, techniques, and AI processes. By coding our own tools, including (E.g. bespoke graph networks, simulations, models or custom Grasshopper plugins), we engage with the city through complexity approaches such as systems theories, self-organization, emergence, intelligence, and adaptation. Our goal is to develop innovative design approaches for smart and sustainable future cities. Explore examples of our students' innovative work at and @complexurbanism on X.
It is essential that you have teaching experience in digital design, urban modelling, simulation, and/or urban analytics. You will need to demonstrate coding abilities (such as Python), familiarity with computer science, AI (ML, ABM, and/or intelligent agents), and/or graph/network creation and modelling. As a [CPU]ai tutor, you will play a crucial role in our team, contributing significantly research-led teaching. You will be part of a studio that integrates novel research with teaching, exploring the latest advancements in computational design. You will work within a dynamic team supported by a well-established lab towards real-world impact. You will inspire and mentor the next generation of architects, guiding them to future practice through development of cutting-edge design tools and processes.
You will also have exceptional inter-personal and communication qualities, excellent organisational and administrative skills, and a collaborative approach to working. We will also look to you to ensure an excellent student experience through the use of relevant and inspiring learning and teaching.
Informal and preliminary discussions are highly encouraged and can be held with Atelier leader Ulysses Sengupta via
