Job summary

Applications are invited for doctors with suitable qualifications and experience to work as a full-time senior clinical fellow in the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Princess Royal Hospital, King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

We have had substantial investment into the service and are looking to appoint a senior clinical fellow to support the growing team. This is fixed term position for 6 months with a view to extend the post for suitable candidates.

The successful candidate will work alongside a team of approachable and supportive Diabetes and Endocrinology consultants as well as a multidisciplinary team including specialist nurses, specialist podiatrists and dietitians. They will partake in a combination of inpatient and outpatient specialist activity with the opportunity to improve their specialist skills within the field.

Involvement in teaching, research and quality improvement projects is encouraged and will be available. The post does not include regular General Medical commitments or out of hours on-calls thus making this a truly unique opportunity.

Main duties of the job

You will work as part of a Multidisciplinary team to manage the Diabetes and Endocrinology Service at the PRUH and will gain an excellent grounding in Diabetes and Endocrinology.

Clinical: The Clinical Fellow will be responsible for both inpatient and outpatient work.

The post holder will lead daily specialist ward rounds with the multidisciplinary team as part of a liaison service within the hospital. These ward rounds are supported by consultants for training and supervision purposes. The post holder will hold the specialist bleep during working hours with the task of reviewing referrals by other teams within the hospital. Consultants will be available to discuss cases and management.

The post holder will do endocrine clinics under supervision and support the Diabetic Foot Clinic. The post holder will support the Programmed Investigations Unit (PIU) by supervising endocrine dynamic testing and prepare documentation for the PIU meetings where investigations are interpreted.

Research: The Clinical Fellow will be asked to support the department's commercial and non-commercial research portfolio. There will be opportunity to join studies as a co-investigator and be involved in peer-reviewed publications.

Job responsibilities

The main duties of the post involve the care of Diabetes and Endocrinology inpatients, attending outpatient Diabetic Foot, Pregnancy and Endocrinology/Thyroid/Bariatric clinics.

The successful applicant will be part of a consultant led team which includes Diabetes Specialist Nurses, Podiatrists, CNS's, Dietitians and Pharmacists. There are daily consultant supported specialist ward rounds and new referrals during the day from other teams within the hospital. There are also inpatient antenatal and diabetic foot rounds.

There will be outpatient endocrinology clinics, which are supervised, but also opportunities to attend specialist MDTs (pituitary, thyroid, adrenal and bariatric) as well as the chance to attend a number of subspecialty clinics (if staffing allows).

The post holder will be expected to assess and manage patients with the support of the consultant and using appropriate clinical guidelines.

The successful candidate will have access to an Educational Supervisor to support personal development and careers advice. There will also be opportunities for formal teaching of medical students and foundation year doctors, contributing to research and quality improvement projects.
