This is a community-based job with the team working from Orchards and visiting children in schools, nurseries and their homes in Sittingbourne and surrounds and the Isle of Sheppey. We are part of a wider team that covers the Medway towns and surrounds which enables broader supervision and learning opportunities. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop both their clinical and leadership skills within this post. We will consider funding for appropriate postgraduate training.

Main duties of the job

The Band 7 post holder will take a lead in delivering the paediatric neurodevelopmental service for the small Swale NHS geographical area and be a part of the highly skilled and dedicated leadership team. You will be based at our purpose built, family friendly building at Orchards, Sittingbourne. You will part of a dynamic, friendly physiotherapy and multi-disciplinary team, seeing children and young people 0-19 years with a wide variety of conditions within a variety of settings including special schools, mainstream schools/ pre-schools, within the home and as outpatients.

The successful applicant will have a mixed clinical caseload, will lead on a specific pathway and will be involved in the development of new pathways and ways of working. You will receive on going regular CPD and supervision and will have the opportunity to undertake quality improvement training.

Applicants require appropriate experience, knowledge and enthusiasm with experience of working with children across the age range with a wide variety of difficulties.

Job responsibilities

Communication and relationship skills To work as a key member of the MDT providing support and professional exchange of ideas and experience within the area of physical therapy, complex disability and neurodevelopmental issues. To attend and lead appropriate meetings within the MDT. To communicate complex condition related information to clients/parents who may have communication problems themselves. To work closely with clients, carers and families, agreeing decision making relevant to the client management. To demonstrate skills in motivating clients and carers to engage in the process. To demonstrate negotiation skills in the management of conflict across a range of highly complex situations. To deal with initial complaints sensitively and to process according to organisations policy. To work effectively with others who may be under stress and or have challenging communication difficulties. To employ excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to have difficult conversations To develop effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders as required. The post holder is required to represent the CTT service at relevant meetings within the multiagency services. Knowledge, training and experience Diploma/Degree in physiotherapy. Registered Practitioner with HCPC. Member of the CSP. Post graduate experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and with an inter-agency approach to the needs of patients. Knowledge and awareness of the wider view of childrens issues, to include health, education and social care of children. To have post graduate training and experience with children 0-19 years with physical and movement disorders in nursery provision, mainstream, special school provisions, clinic and homes. To be able to take a lead for the physiotherapy service for swale children. Working without immediate recourse to Medical colleagues or other professional support. To be independently responsible for comprehensive assessment and treatment of paediatric patient needs including complex medical, psychological, environment, individual and carer needs and circumstances within a wide variety of community and clinical settings. To have well established specialist knowledge of assessment tools and therapy management techniques underpinned by evidence-based practice that are relevant to neurodevelopmental disorders. To have well established knowledge of national policies and clinical guidelines relevant to caseload (including vulnerable adults and children and the mental capacity act) To identify personal and professional development evidenced by a personal development plan as part of the appraisal process. To maintain professional standards by attending appropriate training and development for own clinical field to maintain up to date HPC and CSP registration. To demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to CSP Professional Clinical guidelines. To keep up to date with new techniques and developments for the promotion and maintenance of good practice in own clinical field. To develop a working knowledge of all relevant organisational procedures including (safeguarding children, SEN procedure, vulnerable adults etc.) and other legal requirements. To develop a working knowledge of the principals of clinical governance and their application to professional practice. To be committed to continually improving the patient experience by engaging in regular patient feedback mechanisms and encouraging service users to participate in shaping the service delivery Analytical and Judgement Skills To perform highly specialist, expert holistic Paediatric PT assessment of patients within specialist field, with diverse presentation of conditions/pathology. Use expert highly specialist clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide/contribute to an accurate diagnosis of their condition. Use empathy and analysis to uncover other social/physiological factors that affect compliance on order to facilitate long-term/permanent lifestyle chance. To contribute to the data used to analyse the service. Planning and Organisational Skills Under the direction of the CTT manager to be responsible for the PT treatment of children living within the Swale geographical area, who have needs meting referral criteria. To assist in the planning, coordination, delivery and evaluation of PT for these children To manage, supervise and teach technical instructors, PTs, administrative staff and students, other agencies (non -medical and medical and Multidisciplinary team) Social Services, Education and Parents/Carers. Work alongside other senior staff to develop the PT paediatric community service To plan, organise and prioritise own workload, balancing other patient related and professional demands ensuring that these remain in accordance with those of the team as a whole and assisting / guiding more junior staff, and technical instructors to do likewise. To organise, manage and delegate work under protocol to the wider team and Technical Instructors ensuring a high standard of service Responsibility for Patient/Client Care To accept clinical responsibility as an autonomous practitioner for a designated caseload of patients, and organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time To undertake the assessment and clinical diagnosis of patients using investigative and analytical skills; formulating an individual management and/or treatment programme using advanced clinical reasoning and a range of specialist treatment skills, including a knowledge of alternative treatment options; and ensuring that children and their carers are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans wherever possible, and that consent for interventions is gained To undertake the continuous assessment and evaluation of the treatment programmes and modify them according to the patients needs: adapting practice to meet individual child or familys circumstances, including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences To provide highly specialist advice on patient care to other health, social, educational and voluntary sector services. This may involve negotiating changes to treatment programmes/care plans set by other paediatric professionals, in light of knowledge of childs home or school environment Responsible for Policy and Service Development Implementation To work with other senior staff to ensure that Clinical Governance targets are met including the development of clinical standards and protocols, audit, research, clinical and non clinical risk management To provide specialised spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and training to other members of the MDT and other agencies regarding the therapeutic management of paediatric patients and to promote understanding of the aims of Occupational Therapy and to ensure a consistent approach to patient management and care To work closely with Childrens Therapy Manager, Locality manager and clinical specialists to develop and implement innovative methods of service delivery, which provide best practice, positive outcomes, improved access and the involvement of users in the planning, implementation and evaluation of services To undertake the measurement and evaluation of your own and your teams work and clinical practice through the use of Evidence Based Practice Projects, audit and outcome measures.
