Looking for a fresh challenge? We are recruiting internally for a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to work with our Stroke Team. We will provide you with training and pastoral support and offer an outstanding learning and development package with a broad range of development opportunities. 

The post will be based at the Maidstone Hospital to help deliver specialist speech and language therapy to adult clients as part of multidisciplinary Stroke team. The Trust is delighted to have been chosen as one of the sites for a Hyperacute Stroke Unit in the Kent and Medway Sustainability Transformation, and the postholder will be integral to this exciting and transformative service. Candidates will be enthusiastic, flexible and engaging with a specialist interest in neurorehabilitation. We offer excellent clinical support and supervision, and ongoing professional development is actively encouraged.

Main duties of the job

You will help deliver highly specialist speech and language therapy to the new 46 bedded Stroke ward, a rehab unit at Sevenoaks and to patients in the community You will need to be autonomous in dysphagia assessment and management. You will also need excellent communication skills, a professional approach to both clinical and administrative duties, be organised with excellent prioritisation and time management skills. We run a FEES and videofluoroscopy service and experience in instrumental assessments would be desirable but is not essential as training can be provided. Variable site and weekend working will be expected.

Speech and Language Therapy currently sits within the Diagnostic & Clinical Support Directorate, within the Therapies Division and is co-located with Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Dietetics, making easy work of joint working. The broader SALT team is made up of 19 SALTs and 4 SALT Assistant posts, split across both hospital sites.

Essential criteria

Degree or post graduate diploma in Speech and Language Therapy Registered member of HPC Evidence of on-going CPD/ reflective practice Post graduate qualification in Dysphagia

Desirable criteria

Registered member of RCSLT

Experience/ Knowledge

Essential criteria

Post graduate experience of working with clients with significant communication and /or swallowing disorders post-stroke. Experience of working with adults in the acute setting. Experience of line management including supervision Experience providing training and specialist advice to external agencies Multidisciplinary team working

Desirable criteria

Experience with FEES Experience of working in a tertiary care setting

Essential criteria

Advanced dysphagia skills Advanced communication support skills including performing mental capacity assessments Highly attuned knowledge of evidence based practice, especially in the areas of dysphagia, aphasia, dysarthria and dyspraxia. Understand the principles of clinical governance Understand local and National policy in relation to Stroke Excellent written and verbal communication skills Excellent organisational and reflection skills, including the ability to prioritise and manage your own time effectively
