We are seeking consultants with enthusiasm, commitment, and drive to work closely with colleagues throughout the organisation and within the community to help lead the organisation.

We have 1 Specialist post available based at Lister Hospital in Stevenage, comprising of 10 programmed activities (PAs). The job plan can be amended for those that do not wish to work more than 10 PA’s or that wish to work part time.

This is an excellent opportunity within the Anaesthetics department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. The post is suitable for those with an interest in General Anaesthesia service provision requirements.

The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their approach to working patterns, undertaking theatre work on any site when required. Any changes will be discussed before implementation and the PA allocation reviewed if they have a significant impact on the time commitment required. Enthusiasm and a strong commitment to the training and education of trainees and other staff members are also expected.

Main duties of the job

  • Conduct preoperative assessments to evaluate patients' suitability for anaesthesia and develop a plan for their care.
  • Manage the peri-operative care of these patients.
  • Manage any emergencies that may arise during surgery.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team, including surgeons, nurses, and other medical specialists, to provide comprehensive care to patients.
  • Document all aspects of the anaesthetic care provided to patients accurately and promptly.
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development activities to maintain current knowledge and skills in anaesthesia and pain management.

Person specificationQualifications / TrainingEssential criteria
  • Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council
  • FRCA part 1 or qualification of an equivalent level
  • Experience of Higher Anaesthesia (or equivalent) training
  • Evidence of being up to date and fit to practice safely, and aware of own training needs
Previous ExperienceEssential criteria
  • Shall have completed a minimum of 12 years medical work (either in continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of 6 years should have been in a relevant Specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted
  • Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
  • Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
Previous ExperienceDesirable criteria
  • Understanding of core research principles, methodology and ethics
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidence-based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
