An opportunity has arisen to join our Surgical Dietetic team.

This would be ideal for a Dietitian wishing to expand their skills or currently working in surgery.

Main duties of the job

Experience in enteral tube feeding is required. Experience in complex enteral tube feeding and TPN is desirable but not essential as training can be given.

Previous experience in Surgery is desirable but not essential as training can be given.

Duties include:

-managing a caseload of adults with complex needs referred from the acute surgical service, using evidence based/client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions

- Advising on all aspects of dietetic management of surgical patients for ELHT with support from acute team leads

- Providing training and clinical supervision on the dietetic management of surgical patients for dietitians, dietetic assistant practitioners, and dietetic students

- Representing dietetics at meetings regarding surgical services at ELHT.

This post is based at Royal Blackburn Hospital

Clinical support and supervision will be available from the band 7 Specialist Dietitian as well as band 6 peers. The team is part of the wider Dietetic Department covering the hospitals and communities of East Lancashire. The department has nearly 90 staff and covers many specialties and is known for its innovation and development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will work closely with all members of the MDT to provide expert dietetic care to our surgical patients. The caseload is mainly inpatients in specialities such as HPB and Colorectal as well as Gastro Intestinal Tract outpatient clinics. The postholder would be expected to attend Consultant ward rounds and MDT meetings.

The department is an experienced trainer for Dietetic students covering all placement types from Chester University, and we have recently expanded to provide placements to Manchester Metropolitan and the University of Central Lancashire. The post holder would also be involved in the clinical training of Medical students and other Health Care professional students.

Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria
  • BSc or MSc in Dietetics
  • HCPC current registration.
  • Clinical supervisory skills
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate Dietetic relevant qualifications or equivalent experience
Experience Essential criteria
  • Recent post graduate Dietetic experience in an Acute ward setting
  • Clinical supervision of Dietitians, Dietetic support staff and students
  • Demonstrable evidence of ongoing CPD
  • Experience of working as part of an MDT
  • Worked in the NHS as a Dietitian
  • Experience of parenteral nutrition
  • Experience of managing complex enteral feeding regimens
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Acute surgery
  • Experience working as part of a MDT Nutritional Support team
Skills & Aptitudes Essential criteria
  • Organisational and time management skills
  • IT skills (competent in the use of Microsoft office applications)
  • Ability to interpret complex clinical conditions including biochemistry
  • Competence in calculating nutritional requirements and developing nutrition care plans
  • Highly developed negotiation, persuasion, motivating, counselling and problem solving skills
  • Clinically competent to give specialist nutritional support advice to patients and their support network
  • Clinically competent to initiate and monitor complex enteral feed regimes.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to support Departmental and Trust guidelines/policies for the acute setting
Personal Qualities Essential criteria
  • Ability to respond to unpredictable work patterns and frequent interruptions
  • Ability to prioritise own caseloads effectively
  • Effective working relationships with Dietetic team and MDT
  • Commitment to work across all ELHT service delivery areas as required.
