Job summary

Worcestershire Acute Hospital NHS Trust has recently undertaken amultimillion-pound investment in the operating theatres at the AlexandraHospital. Phase 1 involved the additionof 2 brand new theatres with supporting clinical and staff areas. Due to thisexpansion we are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and professional generalsurgery band 6 team leader.

Following the expansion, the Alexandra Hospital currently has 9 theatresincluding 6 with UCV and 2 dedicated recovery areas. The department provides a7 day a week surgical service involving late duties, nights and weekends.

The successful candidate will have experience within anaestheticsand recovery and will need to be an organised individual who can lead a teamensuring the highest standards of patient safety and care are maintained. You will be able to monitor the use ofequipment and resources, ensuring cost effectiveness and the best use ofresources.

Excellent communication skills and flexibility will be anessential trait of anyone applying for this post also deputising for members ofthe Band 7 team will be a requirement. The development of junior colleagueswill be an important part of your role therefore a relevant teachingcertificate or experience is required.

You will be a:

Operating Department Practitioner or Registered Nurse withrecent scrub experience

Main duties of the job

To be actively involved in staff management issues within the team in support of the senior team leader, in addition to actively participating in the management of the theatre department as necessary To take all measures to ensure safety and report all accidents/incidents/near misses to the theatre coordinator or senior team leader To assist the theatre management team with risk management, participating in the identification of risks To participate in official investigations where required To have an understanding of the theatre budget, ensuring efficient and effective utilisation of resources To be conversant with trust policies, procedures and to participate in the development of policies/procedures where appropriate To assist with the monitoring of staff attendance, and taking a supporting role in the maintenance of day to day discipline within the team To inform the senior team leader / theatre matron of staff failing to meet the required standard of performance taking appropriate action where required To undertake staff appraisals and to identify the training needs to develop staff and the service To be responsible for the equipment in own work area, ensuring that it is used safely and effectively, kept in working order and properly maintained Participate in the supervision, teaching and appropriate assessment of junior and new staff within the department

Job responsibilities

To ensure high standards of patientcare at all times through the effective management of staff and resources

To lead a regular programme ofeducation and development for registered and unregistered staff to reach optimumpotential

To promote the role of the theatrepractitioner as the patient advocate throughout the peri-operative process

To communicate effectively with allmembers of the multi-disciplinary team to co-ordinate all aspects of patientcare

To liaise and work closely with theperson taking continuing responsibility for the operating theatres

To accept personal responsibilityand accountability for infection prevention and control practice

To deputise for the relevant seniorteam leader as necessary

Where appropriate this post willinvolve working across the sites of the WAHT
